What do you think this ignition problem is in my 1987 Karman Golf?

I have a 1987 Mk1 Karman Golf that cut out suddenly and I haven't been able to get it started since. I called out a roadside rescue mechanic who checked the distributor and rotator arm, and he cleaned the elements (if that's what you call them) to no avail. He checked the power to the ignition coil and said there was power getting to it, but not from it. He offered to take it to a garage for me, but I'm trying to fix it as cheaply as possible. So he thought the coil could have died so recommended I replace it, which I have, with no effect. He was confident it would be the coil but did say if it wasn't it could need a new electronic module distributor (is that the same as the distributor cap?). He did say failing that, it could be a bigger electronic problem which frightens me. What is your opinion and what would you recommend?

The coil is there to produce the High Tension (HT) spark needed to fire up the engine. When the engine is turned over a low tension circuit (LT) is feed to the coil. This is a small wire and another small wire then goes from the coil to the distributor. When this circuit is broken by the rotation of the distributor, a high tension (HT) spark is produced and goes along the big lead from the coil to the distributor. This is then distributed to each cylinder in turn.

I am not sure that you have the technical knowledge to complete a test, so would suggest that you find a local trusted garage to test your ignition system out before you start buying more spares.
