Which used diesel car is best for £6000?

I want to buy a used diesel car for £6000. It must be reliable and boast lively performance. I'd also like an automatic gearbox, but not essential. I have shortlisted the Honda Civic 2.2TD. BMW 120D. Vauxhall Astra 2.0TD and Skoda Fabia vRS 1.4 TSI.

What should I buy?

The Civic. But actually the Civic 1.8iVTEC has been more reliable than the 2.2iCDTI. No Civic diesel auto, and best to avoid the 1.8iVTEC i-shift. Don't think you'll get a 1.8iVTEC 5-speed torque converter auto for £6k. Various problems with the other cars on your list. See www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar
