What's the best first car for under £2000?

I'm just getting ready to buy my first (used) car and despite my research I'm finding it a bit overwhelming. I live in the countryside in Wales and am looking for something cheap to run and insure over short commutes and longer rural and city drives. Ideally I want 5 doors and in terms of other features I'm not that fussy as long as I can find something reliable. My budget is £2000 for the car.
