Can you recommend a British-built family car?

My family is looking to buy a car, either new or second hand. We are looking to find the most fuel-efficient model possible. The car will be driven by my mum and driven quite regularly but mostly on short journeys around the town.

It needs to be at least five seater, with a good space and similar in size to our current Ford C-Max. My family are also very keen to buy a model which is built in Britain, so we've been thinking about Toyotas, Nissans or anything similar. We don't have a specific price range in mind, so any advice would be wholly appreciated.

The most efficient built in Britain is a Toyota Auris hybrid. The most efficient diesel is a Vauxhall Astra fitted with the lowest power version of the new 1.6CDTI diesel engine.

You can get Nissan Pulsars fitted with Renault's 1.5DCI engine, but a Pulsar 1.2DIG-T petrol engine should be good for 50mpg. Same goes for the taller Nissan Qashqai, but mpg is about 4mpg worse.
