Why does my X-Type keeping switching to safety mode?

My Jaguar X-Type has done 90k miles with few problems, but over the last six months it inexplicably goes into "Safety Mode". To solve the problem I usually have to pull over, switch off the engine and then restart.

I have little faith in my local Jag dealership (that's a whole different story) and can't find a local specialist. Can you help please?

Check out the entries for the Mk III Mondeo which is identical under the skin apart from the possibility that your Jag might have a DPF: www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/ford/mondeo-iii-2000...d

I have seen adverts indicating that the Jaguar X-Type is fitted with a BMW diesel engine. Is this correct? If so, which models would feature them?
