Why are my 2006 Volkswagen Golf's windows opening on their own?

I have a 2006 Volkswagen Golf Plus TDI. When in Harrogate last Thursday the car was parked on the street. At about 11:00pm the hotel manager called me to say all the windows on the car were down although the car was locked. When left the car earlier in the evening I had locked it and all the windows were closed. This has happened once before, about three years ago, but the car was then parked in my drive. Have you heard of this happening to other Golfs and do you know what might be the cause?

It might be from inadvertently holding the keyfob buttons down after you have locked the car, or it might be moisture ingress to the locking and windows ECU inside the driver's door. I have received this same complaint on average twice a week for 18 years.
