Failed LED lights - can I fit replacements myself?

I have a 2009 Volkswagen Eos and some of the LEDs in both rear indicator units have failed. I thought the advantage of LEDs is that they do not blow like ordinary light bulbs, could this be a indication of an electrical fault elsewhere on the lighting system?

My local dealer has told me I will have to replace both rear light units which, will cost £100 for each unit plus the cost of fitting. This seems a lot, could I fit them myself or is this a specialist job?

Yes, you can probably fit them yourself, but most of the cost will be for the units themselves rather than the labour of fitting them. This is about to become even more of a problem for owners of cars with fancy shaped LED DRLs embedded into the headlight units, because they are much more expensive.
