Car returned from garage with 440 miles on the clock - what can I do?

My Nissan Note spent two months at a local garage having a new catalytic converter fitted. During that time I was forced to use a hire car, at my own cost. However, since my car was returned, I have discovered an additional 440 miles on the clock.

The RAC documentation records the mileage at the time of transportation, as does my own petrol log recorded eight miles earlier. The garage who fixed the car say they just can't account for the miles, nor the wait for the catalytic converter. What can I do?

Well, either the car travelled 440 miles while it was in the hands of the garage, or it didn't. You have two proofs of the mileage of the car when it went into the garage: your mileage log confirmed by the RAC document. You can demand that the garage pays for its use of your car for 440 miles, and to work out what that should be you can make enquiries from car hire companies, then confront the garage again.
