Easytronic gearbox fault

I recently sought your advice regarding my Vauxhall Corsa 2001 Easytronic. The problem is that it drives quite well but will suddenly lose power and come to a standstill, with an F displayed on the dash. It will resume normal service after being left for several minutes.

I was quoted in the region of £1700 for a new clutch and gearbox, but another garage has now said it could be reconditioned for £600 and their willing to put a year’s guarantee on their work. Is it worth having it reconditioned, and does £600 sound like a fair price?

£600 is cheap for this job and if they give a year's guarantee then that doesn't leave you much choice.

I warn readers off automated manuals because of this problem. They can expensively fail at any time after about four years, so if this one has lasted 12 years it's done well.
