Best wheel and tyre size for my new Auris?

Following your advice a couple of weeks ago I'm about to buy an Auris HSD Excel. It comes with 17" alloys and 225/45R17 tyres. I have read your previous warnings about low profile tyres so should I go with these or ask for 16" wheels and deeper tyres?

What is the difference between 17" and 16" in terms of replacement tyre price, ride, fuel economy, handing etc.

The strange thing about the Auris is that it actually rides and handles better on 225/45 R17s than it does on 195/65 R15s, but the 17" tyres and wheelrims are a bit vulnerable to damage.
