BMW has a steering lock fault - can I claim the cost?

I have owned an 07 BMW E91 since new. It is now 6 years old and has done 34000 miles.

A red steering lock light has come up on the dashboard, although the steering lock is working fine. I have taken it to BMW and they say to fix the light, the car needs a new steering lock but this only comes with the steering column, so the total cost will be around £800.

I have checked the internet and it seems that this is a known problem with early 07 models. Your website tells of a recall in May 2007 - TSB: SI B 61 28 06.

Despite this, BMW are refusing to cover the cost or even make a contribution. Do you think I've got any chance in pushing for BMW to pay in full or at least make a significant contribution?

Not if you did not regularly take your BMW to BMW franchises for servicing when it would have been fixed as part of the service. Nevertheless, if it is still less than 6 years old you have a case to demand a free fix.
