Which mid-size estate?

I travel 12K miles per annum. Lots of short runs of less than 5 miles, a daily commute of 12 miles each way, with the odd 50 mile journey. Need to replace a 10 year old Honda Accord Estate 2.4 petrol auto. Want to keep new car for at least 7 years. Must be automatic. Looking at Merc C180 Auto and C220 Diesel Auto or would wait for new Golf Estate TSI 140 DSG.

Should I definitely go for petrol rather than diesel? And, will I regret a VW DSG auto box? Finally, what about Avensis 1.8 Petrol Auto? - I find this very dull.

Have you actually driven an Avensis 1.8i Valvematic Multidrive S? I don't find it dull. I rate it as the best Avensis. And, of course, it comes with a 5 year warranty that will cost you an extra £700 or so from VW.
