Which small auto for comfortable motorway driving?

I'm currently driving a 1999 BMW 328 which I very much like, but needs replacing. The BMW is too large for me, and I'd like to find something refined, quiet and comfortable for commuting as well as occasional motorway journeys.

It has to be automatic, have acceleration for traffic and cruise well on longer journeys. The A1 Sportback looks good from reviews, but isn't old enough to have come down to my budget of £12k absolute max. The Volkswagen Golf gets the best reviews, but while it's shorter than the BMW it's also wider, which isn't good for parking. Any ideas?

Anything VAG automatic forces you into a DSG and I won't recommend them. I'd stick with BMW and look at the 1-Series. They are all torque converter autos.
