Buying an economical family car - what would you recommend for £8-10K?

Looking to buy an economical to run family car (we are replacing a Vectra) my husband currently travels an hour each way to work so we are looking for decent boot space and are thinking of buying a diesel rather than a petrol version.

We are happy to go for a smaller car than the Vectra so are thinking SEAT Altea XL, Skoda Octavia hatchback or a Nissan Qashqai - have ruled out a Ford Focus due to boot space - which of these 3 would you choose or is there another car we should consider? Hoping to spend more near the £8,000 than the £10,000

Qashqais are expensive used buys. A Fiesta 1.6 Econetic could be a good idea, if you can find one. 60mpg+ KIA cee'd and Hyundai i30 1.6CRDIs have been reliable.
