Pump failure? Steering on our Passat feels funny in right hand corners

Our Volkswagen Passat was bought used from a main dealer with warranty last December. Since then it has developed intermittent loss of power assistance when going around some right hand bends.

This is felt through the steering wheel as a momentary loss of steering which is quite unnnerving to say the least. Our local dealer tried to explain it as ill fitting front mud flaps.

Because it is very intermittent it's very difficult to get the dealer to address the issue and we don't know what to do or how to make a claim against the Volkswagen warranty scheme.

Obviously, the first thing to do is remove the mudflaps and see if the problem then continues.
