What could be causing my Mazda's power steering to fail at slow speed?

A few weeks ago I sent you an email regarding the curious sensation on my Mazda steering, which only occurred after I had driven a few miles and I assumed was temperature related. I have since had the car serviced at a Mazda outlet and mentioned the steering. When I collected the car I was told they had driven the car and found nothing wrong. However, since then, on a few occasions when driving very slowly, such as driving into my garage, the power assistance has disappeared such that the steering wheel can hardly be turned. I found that by increasing the engine revs, the power assistance returned.

Obviously something is wrong and I propose taking the car to a garage for it to be sorted. However, if you have any thoughts as to what it could be I would be very grateful for your views, as I don’t like going to a garage without some idea as to what the problem is?

This would depend on the age of the car and the type of power assistance to the steering. Originally, it was an engine-driven hydraulic pump. Later cars had electric-driven hydraulic pumps. Many new models have pure electric steering.
