Buying a 4x4 used car - what would you recommend?

I have a small budget of 3,500 - 5,000 and would like to buy a small 4x4.

I have been looking around at these models: Toyota RAV4 (2003-5), Honda CR-V, Nissan X-Trail, KIA Sportage (2005).

Two parts for the question: which should I go for in terms of economy (should I also be looking at Hyundai's?) and running costs.

Second - it is my first time buying a 4x4 and I want to ensure that I make the right choice, should I look privately or through trade?

The most reliable is a Honda CR-V Mk II 2.0i from 2002 to 2006. Many are automatic. They are quite heavy on fuel, though.
