People carrier vs 4x4 in the Highlands?

We are a young family with two kids who have recently moved to the Highlands of Scotland.

We have a budget of around 8-10k for a second hand car.

We need it to be reliable and economical in terms of petrol, on-road costs and repair, and we intend to tour around Scotland and Europe with all our camping stuff. We also need the car to take one of us to and from work (26m a day)

What is our best option do you think? People carrier, 4WD or estate? What model should be looking out for?

Probably something with part time four wheel drive, such as a current shape Honda CR-V. Go for low spec and get better value for money. £8-£10k may not stretch to a 2.2i CTDI unless it is quite mileagy.
