Where can I get insurance for a hire car when driving abroad?

I hired a car at an Irish airport last week and found that the excess protection insurance was greater than the cost of hiring the vehicle. Is there an insurance company that covered the excess and is reliable?

But if you don't purchase the rental company insurance, the rental company is more likely to find faults with the car when you return it.
