Does Autoglass have a monopoly on windscreen replacement in the UK?

In answer to DB Norfolk (‘Art of glass’), I had a similar encounter. Not having windscreen cover on my elderly Peugeot 106, I shopped around for a quote, with Autoglass topping the scales at a whopping £300 odd. I queried at the time Autoglass’ price and they duly reduced it to about £250, still under the misapprehension they were going to get the job even though they knew what I had been quoted (National did the job in the end for £90).

My question is, are we paying for their expensive TV and radio advertising, and where they are an insurers appointed window repairer/replacer, surely these seemingly inflated costs (that bear little or no resemblance to others), indirectly have consequences on our already sky high insurance premiums?

Time for the Monopolies Commission (if it still exists) to take a peek?
