What's causing a burning smell to come from my overheating 2009 Volkswagen Golf TDI?

I have a 2009 Volkswagen Golf 2.0 TDI. A few months ago I drove about 13 miles on a hot day and when I got out of the car I could smell hot metal, and hear the engine fans running furiously after the engine was turned off. The heat coming from the exhaust was incredible. I contacted the dealer who said that it was nothing to worry about, but to watch out for any fault indication lights. The same thing happened again last week after a drive of about 15 miles.

I contacted the Volkswagen breakdown service, who said not to drive the car and sent out the RAC. The RAC engineer checked out the car and confirmed that the radiator was still warm, ruling out a blockage in the cooling system. He said that his father in law had experienced the same problem on his Golf and the dealer said that it was Vokswagen technology and that this would happen occasionally. I would welcome your thoughts on the likely cause and whether I need to do anything.

That is simply the diesel particulate filter burning off cold start soot. It has to get extremely hot to do so, and because it is in the exhaust manifold this naturally increases under-bonnet temperatures, when the thermo switches the fans on.

Comfortable and quiet on the move, enjoyable to drive. Nicely trimmed with great attention to detail. 1.4 TSI sweeter to drive than a diesel.
