Winter Tyre Advice

Please can you tell me if I can put the winter tyres I purchased for my Ford Galaxy (2010 model)on the Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer I recently purchased, or do I need to purchase new ones?

The tyre on the Astra is size 215 - 50 R17 which are on alloys and the winter tyres I have in the garage are 215 - 60 R16 on steel rims. Your advice would be very much appreciated.

Sitting here, I don't know if the steel rims will actually fit the hubs of the Astra, clear the brakes and have the right offset. Obviously try the fronts first as that is where any problem is most likely to occur.
