2003 Yaris D4D engine struggling to tick over until warm.

I have owned a 53 plate Toyota Yaris D4D for six years which hasn't caused me an ounce of bother. It has 92000 miles on the clock. Recently I've had an annoying issue with the engine idling. When you first start the car, the engine really struggles to tick over & is not smooth at all. It sounds like it tries to cut out constantly & jerks the car a bit. It immitates a tractor almost at times. My mechanic thought it may be the glow plugs as I have had engine lights for those previously but changing them hasn't relieved the problem. The garage that changed the plugs noticed the problem too & wonder if there is a problem with the "cold-start". They had to strip the engine down for the job & didn't notice any other problems. The car has had regular services & regular changes of maintenance parts.

Have you any thoughts what the problem may be? My concern now is as the car is 8 years old, is this the start of costly & frequent repairs? Is it time to think about changing it?

This kind of problem can be cause by a very small airleak into the injection system.
