A problem with my V40 engine

I have a Volvo V40 52 plate. In 2009 I reported a noise from the engine to my Volvo garage and they diagnosed a VVT (variable valve timing unit) problem. This was replaced but the noise came back after approximately a year.

This was again reported to the same garage and after several communications a goodwill discount was agreed and another VVT and Pulley were fitted. Now, after another 18 months from the second VVT refit the same noise is back again.

I guess this time the garage will not attend to me, but is a Variable Valve timing unit or its Pulley a very serious issue for a Volvo V40 '52 plate at 105,000 miles, or can I just ignore the noise and carry on driving?

Is this VVT failure due to mileage/age or heavy loading?

Assuming it is a 1.8, this is the old Mitsubishi 1.8GDI engine and is prone to eventually coking up if not run on high octane 98Ron or 99Ron petrol. See: www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/volvo/s40v40-1996/?s...d
