MPG reading on Honda

I wonder whether it's a general rule or Honda specific that the MPG indicator reading in the car is a little on the generous side. After a trip of 397 mainly motorway miles, the car indicator registered an average of 48.8mpg - Note the odometer and mpg indicator was set to zero at the start of the journey. Doing my own calculations I come up with a figure of 42.27mpg.
Makes you wonder whether the car mpg indicator is a wast of time, or has been deliberately set to make the the mpg look better than it actually is.

They not only very from model to model, they vary from car to car of the same make and model.
