Eco worrier

I have just bought a 2004 manual BMW 320 diesel ES Tourer. I switched on the computer at the start of a run largely in 6th gear of 130 motorway miles. At the end I had done no better than 45mpg according to the computer. I had expected nearer 60mpg for this journey as I was driving as economically as I could to test it out. Am I right to think it should do better than this? If so what should I do?

No. Remember it's winter and in lower temperatures diesels use more fuel. You might do better on BP Ultimate diesel (I do). But unless you drive at 60mph I doubt you'll better 45mpg by much.
