E-Class reliability

I am looking to purchase a three or four-year-old E-Class diesel automatic (Avantgarde preferred).

From the many 'expert' reviews that are around, am I right in believing that there are fewer mechanical reliability issues with the E220 CDi than those reported for the E280 CDi or E320 CDi?

What you need to ensure is that the car is a post 2006 summer facelift, which normally means 2006/56 or later. The facelift cars can be identified by the venetian blind effect louvres at the tops of the main headlamps.
