How can I retain a private number plate?

My daughter recently was involved in an accident whilst driving. Her car is a possible write-off, subject to condition assessment. She has a private plate on the car which she had as a gift from her grand parents which she would love to keep. What is the procedure now in retaining ownership of the plate? Or do I put it on retention with the DVLA to safe guard ownership of it straight away?

You will need to act quickly in this circumstance - immediately inform the insurers about her private number plate before they write off the car. You will need them to provide an engineers report to prove that the vehicle is no longer registered, then as you say you will need to apply to the DVLA via a V137 form for retention of the plate. You can do this on the DVLA's website and it only takes a few minutes.
