Watergaitor

I have had a report from my local VW Garage that the offside front outer CV boot on my Passat Sport is showing signs of splitting. I am not sure what this means even though they tried to explain it. Apparently it is something to do with the suspension. Can you explain further, and is the price of £117.20 reasonable? The car is six years old.

It’s a rubber cover over a greased driveshaft joint that keeps water out grease inside so the joint remains lubricated. If it splits you lose the grease, the driveshaft joints dry out and wear and the driveshaft snaps, possibly sending the car out of control, which is why a split driveshaft boot is an MoT failure. Yes, £117.20 is reasonable because the hub has to come off to slide the new driveshaft boot on.
