Compacted Compact

My friend, who is no longer in the first flush of youth, is considering replacing his P-reg automatic BMW 3 Series Compact, as maintenance costs are escalating. Have you any suggestions? A replacement needs to be about the same size (to fit in his garage), petrol engine, automatic - and he likes BMW, but not the current models.

He could p/x for a later model used Compact auto. Or he could use the scrappage scheme to get £2,000 off a new Volvo C30 auto.
