Shouldn’t happen

I need to change my company car and am writing to see if you have any recommendations. I currently have a 2002/52 Subaru Forester that has approx. 160,000 miles on the clock. Our accountant says I am being hammered on tax due to high emissions. I work as a vet in rural North Yorkshire and do approx. 35,000 miles a year, mostly on minor roads. I need a car with proper off-road ability but which is also capable of towing a horse trailer comfortably and smoothly on longish motorway journeys. I loved the Subaru in all respects except that my boss complained that the running costs and fuel bills were very high. I don't think he would be keen on replacing it with the new diesel version. I have had a look at the Daihatsu Terios, but have had mixed reviews.

You can now get 2.0-litre boxer diesel versions of both the Legacy and the Forester that offer nearly 50mpg. The Ford Kuga has a fairly high towing capacity and relatively low CO2. Big discounts on them at the moment. But, if you want status and a towing capacity of 2,000kg is enough, the best is the new Audi Q5, probably with the 2.0TDI engine and manual transmission. Drives beautifully, does over 40mpg. See road test and video test at www.honestjohn.co.uk
