Why are hybrid cars petrol and electric? Would it not make it more economical on fuel to have diesel/electric hybrids?

Peugeot will introduce diesel hybrids next year. KIA already has LPG hybrids on sale in South Korea. The problem with diesel is nitrous oxide emissions. Because of their diesel particulate filters, these engines are not as suitable for stop-start and occasional running as petrol engines.
