Apparently, the Alfa Romeo Tonale is the brand's most technologically advanced car ever. It can take over-the-air updates, has built-in Amazon Alexa and even comes with an NFT digital certificate which marks the end of printed service records.
We lost you there for a moment, didn't we? While Alfa's marketing bods think the above are the Tonale's strongest selling points, we'd disagree. We think it's the fact it looks 'phwoarrrr'.
It's just a shame that it's so late to the party. While other premium manufacturers have been selling family SUVs for several generations now, Alfa Romeo didn't launch its first SUV (the Stelvio) until 2017 - and it's taken another five years to follow that up with its difficult second album.
So why should the Alfa Romeo Tonale really be on your radar? Well, we'll start with the efficient hybrid engines. There are two of them: the mildest of hybrids, which uses a diddy little battery pack to provide a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a small amount of electrical assistance. And then there's the plug-in hybrid, which uses a much bigger battery pack and a 1.3-litre petrol engine.
The mild-hybrid (or simply the Tonale Hybrid as it's marketed) is two-wheel drive, while the PHEV is four-wheel drive. We've only driven the former so far and it's definitely at the sporty end of the family SUV market, thanks to its direct (if overly light) steering and impressive cornering composure. The weedy engine does let it down somewhat, though, while the stodgy dual-clutch auto gearbox also takes away some of the shine.
The plug-in hybrid Tonale is the better option, we reckon, if only for the extra oomph provided by the punchy turbo engine and powerful electric motor. It can travel more than 40 miles on a charge, which is pretty good by PHEV standards, and also means it qualifies for lower company car tax (giving it an advantage over rivals like the Range Rover Evoque P300e).
Perhaps more important than performance in a family SUV, the Alfa Romeo Tonale is quite a versatile car, capable of carrying four adults in comfort. You can fit a fifth person in too, if you must, although no one will thank you for it.
The interior looks pretty smart, helped by the 10.3-inch infotainment screen and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. It doesn't feel as spacious or as upmarket as the new BMW X1's cabin, though, while even mainstream competitors like the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage don't feel noticeably downmarket compared to the Tonale.
In typical Alfa Romeo fashion, the Tonale is an interesting left-field choice in a competitive segment. It's good to drive (although the Alfa Romeo Giulia saloon holds greater appeal if that's a priority) and is guaranteed to turn heads, but it lacks some substance that's required if the brand is serious about tempting buyers away from the premium German brands.

Alfa Romeo Tonale 2024: Handling and ride quality
Alfa Romeo has traditionally made some of the best handling family cars on the market, but it's had its work cut out with the Tonale's Jeep Compass underpinnings. Still, the Alfa Romeo Tonale feels like one of the more agile cars in its class, although the overly light steering doesn't exactly boost confidence.
That doesn't come at the expense of comfort, either. Our Alfa Romeo Tonale Hybrid Veloce test car, with its 19-inch alloy wheels and adaptive suspension, did a commendable job of dealing with the bumpy roads of our Yorkshire test route without ever feeling floaty. The plug-in hybrid is a bit firmer (because of the weight of the batteries), while it's worth avoiding the optional 20-inch alloy wheels if you're seeking comfort.
If you live in a rural area, it's worth noting that only the Alfa Romeo Tonale PHEV comes with four-wheel drive - the mild-hybrid Tonale is strictly front-wheel drive. It doesn't struggle for grip in normal conditions, though, and neither would be our choice if you actually wish to venture off road.
Alfa Romeo Tonale 2024: Engines
The Alfa Romeo Tonale is being launched in mild hybrid form, using a (very) small battery and a 48-volt electric motor to provide a small amount of electrical assistance. You're not going to travel any serious distance under electric power alone in the Tonale MHEV (mild hybrid electric vehicle), although it will coast downhill or creep to a stop with the engine off.
Said engine is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol which, with the aforementioned electrical assistance, can take the Tonale from a standstill to 62mph in a swift-enough 8.8 seconds. It would be swift enough, at least, if it wasn't for the slightly stodgy throttle response that can make a hasty getaway a slightly irksome affair. Switching the Alfa's 'DNA' controller to 'dynamic' mode does make things a bit livelier, although the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox does like to hold onto low gears a little longer than necessary in this situation.
Although it's not cheap, the Alfa Romeo Tonale plug-in hybrid is probably the better option. It uses a smaller 1.3-litre petrol engine which works with an electric motor to provide quite punchy performance: it'll accelerate to 62mph in 6.2 seconds. The petrol engine kicks in and out fairly seamlessly, while the extra power provided by the hybrid setup is welcome.
Alfa Romeo Tonale 2024: Safety
There's a lengthy list of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems fitted as standard to the Alfa Romeo Tonale, including adaptive cruise control (with lane centering) as well as intelligent speed control (which will adjust your speed to the speed limit).
Euro NCAP awarded the Alfa Romeo Tonale a maximum five stars for safety when it was crash tested in 2022. Parents take note: the Alfa Romeo Tonale comes with Isofix child seat mounting points on the outer rear seats, but not for the middle seat or front passenger seat.
Alfa Romeo Tonale 2024: Towing
If you're looking to use the Alfa Romeo Tonale as a tow car, the Hybrid's towing capacity is limited to 1500kg, while the PHEV can tow just 1250kg. Both the Range Rover Evoque and BMW X1 can lug up to 2000kg (depending on specification) so it's worth looking elsewhere if you've got a caravan to tow.

Alfa Romeo Tonale 2024: Practicality
The Alfa Romeo Tonale doesn't actually feel that spacious up front - but that's mainly because of the relatively high dashboard and low seating position. It's designed to feel sporty, so you'd be better looking at the BMW X1 if you want a more open-plan interior. There's enough space for adults to get comfortable in the front, though, while the usual array of stowage areas means you'll always find somewhere to store your odds and ends.
The rear seats feel a bit claustrophobic, too, partly because of the rising window line. You can squeeze three adults side-by-side but you might want to look at a slightly larger SUV if you plan to do so regularly - the middle seat is rather narrow while there's also an awkward bump in the floor where you'd want to rest your feet. Isofix mounting points on the outer rear seats will be useful for fitting child seats.
In terms of boot size, the mild-hybrid Alfa Romeo Tonale can carry 500 litres of luggage - a figure which drops quite significantly in the PHEV, down to 385 litres. That's pretty poor for a family SUV and less than a BMW X1 plug-in hybrid can manage.
Alfa Romeo Tonale 2024: Quality and finish
If you're looking at premium SUVs like the Audi Q3 and Volvo XC40, you're going to have high expectations when it comes to interior build quality. And, generally, the Alfa Romeo Tonale feels posh enough for a car of this price - but it doesn't exactly exceed expectations. There are a few brittle finishes here and there, while the buttons in some competitors just feel a bit more solid to touch.
Alfa Romeo Tonale 2024: Infotainment
The 10.25-inch infotainment display fitted to the Alfa Romeo Tonale is one of our favourite features of the car. It's much better than the old navigation system used in the Stelvio and Giulia, with fast responses and iPhone-like menu layouts that can be configured to your taste. It's a shame it doesn't have a rotary controller for easier operation on the move but with Amazon Alexa built in (as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), you can just shout at it to perform essential tasks.
As well as the central screen, the Tonale comes with a 12.3-inch TFT digital display behind the steering wheel. It's not as fancy as Audi's Virtual Cockpit, but it looks smart enough and there's a trio of layouts you can flick between.

The cheapest Alfa Romeo Tonale is the Speciale launch edition model, which starts at around £38,500 with the mild-hybrid engine. The Alfa Romeo Tonale Ti is a smidgen under £40,000, while the Veloce starts from £42,500 (or a meaty £48,500 with plug-in hybrid power).
They're bold prices when the new BMW X1, Audi Q3 and Range Rover Evoque can all be picked up for around £34,000 (or less). When you compare the Alfa Romeo Tonale like-for-like, though, it starts to make a little more sense - even the most affordable models are well-equipped, with 18-inch alloy wheels, a 10.25-inch navigation system and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster as standard on the Tonale Ti.
Alfa Romeo Tonale 2024: Running Costs
Although the Alfa Romeo Tonale Hybrid uses only the mildest of electrical assistance, it can officially see up to 47.9mpg (depending on trim level). That makes it pretty economical, although expect that figure to drop in the real world. High-mileage drivers should look at a diesel SUV alternative.
The Alfa Romeo Tonale PHEV's 15.5kWh battery provides an electric-only range of 43 miles - a relatively long distance compared to some alternatives, and far enough to bring savings in company car tax for business users. The official fuel economy figure of up to 257mpg should probably be taken with a pinch of salt but, if you keep the Tonale PHEV charged and rarely venture beyond its electric range, it should be very efficient.

The new Alfa Romeo Tonale is now available to order, priced from £38,595. From launch, customers can choose between the Ti and Veloce, or the Speciale launch edition.
The Alfa Romeo Tonale is the most technologically advanced Alfa Romeo ever, says the brand, and is the first vehicle ever to be equipped with an NFT digital certificate and possesses top-level connectivity and an innovative infotainment system; designed to offer Over The Air (OTA) updates and integration with Amazon Alexa. As standard across the range it comes equipped with a 10.25-inch touchscreen with DAB radio, Bluetooth, navigation and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, together with a six-speaker sound system and wireless charging pad.
Dual zone air conditioning, automatic headlamps with dusk sensor and automatic high-beam, auto wipers with rain sensor, auto-dimming rearview mirror and electric folding and heated exterior mirrors ensure driver comfort across the range, while keyless go, powered tailgate and front and rear parking sensors with backup camera with dynamic lines add extra convenience. Intelligent adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking (AEB), drowsy driver detection, speed assist, traffic sign recognition bring enhanced safety as standard to the Tonale range.

The new Alfa Romeo Tonale is powered by the brand’s first electrified powertrain. Unique to Alfa Romeo, the 1.5-litre 160PS Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT) petrol engine is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and features a brand-new and exclusive 48-volt 15-kW, 55-Nm ‘P2’ electric motor which is capable of powering the wheels even when the internal combustion engine is off, offering an authentic hybrid driving experience.
The car delivers the driving dynamics and agility of a true Alfa Romeo thanks to the deployment of specific technical solutions which offer the most direct steering in its segment, a brake-by-wire system for regenerative braking and Dynamic Torque Vectoring.

The Alfa Romeo Tonale Plug-In Hybrid Q4 completes the Tonale range combining maximum efficiency and sportiness: more than 49 miles in full-electric in the urban cycle, 372 miles in the total cycle and emissions reduced to 26g/km. The Alfa Romeo Tonale Plug-In Hybrid Q4 is available to order now, priced from £44,595 for the Speciale.
The powertrain in the Plug-in Hybrid Q4 makes it the most efficient Tonale in the range, offering the best in terms of performance and battery life. The advanced hybrid system combines a 180PS, 1.3-litre turbocharged MultiAir, 4-cylinder engine coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission to provide traction to the front axle, with an electric motor capable of supplying 90kW of max peak power and 250Nm of torque to the rear axle.
The 306-volt, 15.5kWh lithium-ion battery supplies an electric range of over 49 miles in the urban cycle and more than 372 miles of total range, making the Tonale Plug-in Hybrid one of the most efficient plug-in hybrid SUVs. The new hybrid powertrain reduces CO2 emissions to 29g/km and improves fuel consumption to deliver 217.3mpg in the WLTP cycle. With the aim of providing maximum efficiency, it takes less than 2.5 hours to fully charge the battery from a 7.4 kW charger.
Equipped with a Q4 all-wheel-drive system—the front wheels are powered by the internal combustion engine and the rear wheels are powered by the electric motor— helping to provide best-in-class agility, lightness and driving dynamics.
Its 280PS hybrid powertrain ensures it accelerates from zero to 62 mph in just 6.2 seconds and onto a top speed of 84 mph in full-electric mode and 128 mph in hybrid mode, with the e-AWD system providing instantaneous deployment of 100 per cent of available torque from the electric motor on the rear axle.
The advanced 4x4 hybrid system guarantees maximum stability both off-road and on. It does not physically connect the two propulsion systems, but rather coordinates them, making the Tonale Plug-In even lighter and unmatched in its handling.
On the Tonale Plug-In Hybrid Q4, the Alfa D.N.A. drive selector functionalities have been redesigned to enhance its efficiency and performance. It is possible to manage the Q4 traction and the electronic controls, coordinate the action of the engine and transmission and modify the sensitivity of the commands all on a single selector dial.
- Dynamic mode prioritises the vehicle’s performance with a specific calibration of the throttle, management of the transmission and stability controls, which have been combined with a more direct steering response.
- Natural mode uses hybrid driving and all-wheel drive to optimise the efficiency of the internal combustion engine and electric motor, without compromising performance.
- Advanced Efficiency obtains maximum energy efficiency in full-electric driving mode. When the driver removes their foot from the throttle the car will continue to drive in Sailing mode, while the new eCoasting Descent Control is activated when going downhill to maintain a constant speed of 31 mph (adjustable with a light touch of the throttle or brake).
The addition of EV features on the Tonale Plug-in Hybrid Q4 guarantee an even more efficient and relaxing driving experience. E-Save allows drivers to recharge or maintain the battery level when the internal combustion engine is on; the regenerative braking system allows drivers to recover energy during the phases of deceleration and braking, storing it in the battery pack, and by activating E-Coasting, energy recovery takes place even when slowing down without a foot on the brake pedal. The EV Features can be controlled by the driver through the instrument panel.
Superior software and connectivity have been provided as standard to offer the brand’s trademark driving pleasure, while guaranteeing a comfortable and connected experience. The integration with the Amazon Alexa voice assistant offers the convenience of interacting with the system without the driver having to remove their hands from the wheel. Amazon Alexa also allows the driver to remain updated on the state of the vehicle from the comfort of their home, providing useful information like the state of charge of the battery in the Tonale Plug-In Hybrid.
The brand-new infotainment system comes as standard and offers functionality and services which are constantly updated via its customisable Android operating system and 4G connectivity with Over The Air (OTA) updates. The high-resolution 22.5-inch screens — 12.3-inch totally digital screen and 10.25-inch main touchscreen unit — features an intuitive and easy-to-use system. The dials in the Tonale Plug-in Hybrid Q4 includes features such as the elettro-biscione, in the lower part of the right dial, which changes colour based on the electric motor’s status (off, on, on and charging) and provides all the information related to power and charging.
Four new functionalities make their debuts on the Tonale Plug-in Hybrid Q4 and further expand upon the Alfa Connect Services:
- E-control: allows the customer to control various functionalities based on the EV features—including charging and the climate control system— directly from the My Alfa Connect App
- Dynamic Range Mapping: allows drivers to travel with peace of mind, showing them the destinations they can reach based on the battery charge
- Charging Station Finder: allows the customer to see the nearest public charging stations both on the navigation system map and the My Alfa Connect app
- My eCharge: allows for the use of the My Alfa Connect app to directly access Free2Move eSolutions services to manage public and private charging. It will be possible to locate the public charging stations, check the charging methods, make payments, visualise the charge history and manage charging from a home Wallbox – allowing drivers to decide how much electricity to use and even increase, decrease, suspend and reactivate the charge
The Tonale Plug-In Hybrid Q4 has further built upon an ecosystem of Alfa Romeo services to offer an innovative customer journey, including a Non-Fungible-Token (NFT) certificate on the blockchain. Introduced on the Tonale, NFT technology is a brand-new feature in the automotive world and Alfa Romeo is the first manufacturer to connect an NFT digital certificate to a vehicle. Based on the customer’s selection, the NFT generates a certificate which guarantees the identity and maintenance record of the vehicle, supporting its residual value. The NFT certificate provides a further source of credibility on the used market and is even more valuable on the Tonale Plug-In Hybrid Q4 as it contains even more information.
The Tonale Plug-in Hybrid Q4 is the top-of-the-range model. It is available in Ti trim, with an elegant and distinctive character, and Veloce trim, with a more sporty feeling.

The Tonale Plug-In Hybrid Q4 will also be available as an exclusive SPECIALE launch version with enhanced contents and connectivity including gloss black body kit with titanium side and front inserts, a SPECIALE badge on the wing and a black Tonale badge, 20-inch alloy wheels, metal pedals and red Brembo brake calipers.

The Tonale Plug-In Hybrid Q4 is a milestone in the Alfa Romeo journey from ‘zero to zero’, which will take it from being a zero per cent electrified brand at the start of 2022 to being a zero-emissions and 100 per cent electrified brand in 2027. The new Alfa Romeo Tonale Plug-In Hybrid Q4 is priced from £445* per month on PCP in Speciale trim, rising to £545* for a Veloce. Orders are now open for the Veloce and Speciale, with first deliveries taking place in Q1, while TI will be available to order in Q2.

Alfa Romeo unveils new Tonale trim line-up and pricing structure
Alfa Romeo has revised its trim levels and pricing for Tonale models, which the firm claims represents better value.
The trim line up has been revised with Sprint, Veloce and new range topping Tributo Italiano variants. The Tonale is available for the first time in Sprint trim, replacing the previous TI version.
Tonale Sprint models benefit from sportier aesthetic enhancements over the previous TI variants, including black inserts on the body kit and skid plate, black and white wheel centre caps and a dark Miron scudetto front grille. The Tonale is also available with a highly shock resistant, 15g wearable key, that is water resistant up to 15 metres.
Prices for the Tonale Sprint start at £35,995 for the 1.5-litre MHEV 160 DCT model, while £1,525 has been cut from the MHEV Veloce price too.
Tonale Veloce variants also benefit from an increased specification, including heated leather seats as standard with four-way driver and passenger lumbar adjustment, a heated steering wheel and washer nozzles and ambient dash lighting. On the exterior, the body kit is now gloss black.
Tributo Italiano models are available exclusively in the three colours of the Italian flag and feature exterior stylistic additions including body coloured bodykit and interior changes including new perforated leather seats with red accents.
