Nissan Almera 1.6 (2005) - Groaning / Growling Noise on biting point - avakil007

Hello:

I really need help with this.
I have this Nissan almera 2005 SE hatchback. It makes weird growling or groaning noise I take off from the dead stop. Noise goes away after car gets hot.
I thought it's my clutch but my clutch is working fine and this sound comes only when I press mild gas on while holding the clutch on the biting point.
Also strange thing is noise is not there when I take off the car without pressing gas, sure car takes off slower but noise only comes when I press gas and release the clutch slowly. Noise goes away when clutch is released completely. Noise is not there in the reverse gear either. Only first gear.
I read about throw out bearing but if it's bearing then noise should always be there. I tried to give as much information as I could.

Please help

Will you clarify the model, engine size and year please?

The 2005 Almera had either a 1.5, 1.8 petrol or 2.2 diesel engine.

Worn clutch relase bearing is likely. Drive till it drops or replace with clutch and pressure plate £££s

I thought of clutch release bearing but one of my friends said if its clutch release bearing then sound should be there all the time and it should go away when you press the clutch.

But for my car noise starts when i press mild gas and release clutch slowly and hold it on biting point and noise goes away when i fully release the clutch.

I'd say the problem is a worn clutch centre plate. Not so much worn friction linings, but a worn centre or drive take-up damper springs.

I should mention that this noise only comes when I press the gas and release the clutch.

Noise is not there when i release the clutch without pressing the gas. Car starts moving slowly without gas but no noise. As soon as i press the gas and hold the clutch on the biting point when i am moving off the junction or in the traffic noise starts coming.

Also noise goes away when car is hot.

Sounds exactly what I would expect with a worn centre disc, which could be described like a growling noise.

For what it's worth I once rebuilt the engine on a 1976 Vauxhall Cavalier I owned in the 80s. I replaced the clutch while the engine was out. I was working in a Vauxhall dealership at that time. The same noise as you describe started a short while afterwards. I knew it was something to do with the clutch or gearbox, but having just replaced the clutch I didn't suspect it. I took the gearbox out and replaced the front bearing, but that didn't cure it, so I took the gearbox out again and replaced the centre plate. That did cure it and it was exchanged under warranty.

My other half had the same problem with her Mitsubishi Lancer recently. We never got round to having the job done. We replaced the car which was due to go anyway.

Roughly how much it cost to replace the centre disc? Is it an expensive job?

I had a similar thing on my Toyota at about 50,000 miles. Still does it occasionally now at 212,000 miles. It's on the original clutch. I wouldn't worry about it too much!

You never replace just the centre disc (the drive plate). You replace the cover and realease bearing at the same time as all will be worn and since you have the completely dismantle the clutch to replace just one part the labour cost is the same. That is why clutches are mostly sold in 3 piece kits.

As for cost suggest you ask a garage if you are not planning to DIY.

Thank you very much for the response. Much appreciated. :)

The reason why only replaced the centre plate on my old Cavalier was:

a. The complete clutch had only just been replaced a couple of weeks previous, and only the defective part was covered by warranty.

b. I did the work myself.

As Skidpan says, in your case, and almost all others, it would not make economic sense to replace the centre plate on its own.

Yes that make sense. My car is on 59K so i think its time to replace the clutch, clutch is quite high anyway.

Clutch will last a year or two even if i don't change it but this noise every morning is so annoying so i would change the clutch.

Thank you very much for your help.
