  • rover 420 GSI (high Emissions) 6 Sep 2003 (Forum)
The has just failed it\'s mot due to emission being well over the top like a base idle CO 2 being 9.9% Now I found a useful site on the web giving sensor values, for this system. Check Coolant Temp sens, OK 2.5K ohms when hot. Lambada senors valur 0.8 v and rising, not the usual up and down between 0.2 & 0.8V. But the odd I found was the throttle postion sensor, supply voltage 5v, at idle it should be 0.5, but it was 4.5v, and at full throttle was only 4.8v.
  • Help, 2l Carlton loss of power 23 Jun 2003 (Forum)
How do you check? There does not appear to be water in the oil or oil in the water although it has lost a little coolant lately. Does all of this stink of head gasket failure !?! any help or suggestions ?
  • VW Polo, no service history, what to do? 2 Aug 2002 (Forum)
Flush radiator and engine block, fill with G11 or G12 (my preference for longer-life) VW-approved coolant 8. Replace brake fluid 9. Check cambelt, replace even if only slightly worn Does this look reasonable? Is there anything else I should get checked and/or replaced? cheers Paul
  • Citroen Xsara (1997 - 2004) - 99 1.4 - 'Check engine' light at higher speeds 5 Oct 2008 (Forum)
A spring of clear fluid appeared to be coming from one of the pipes to the right of the engine, and there was a funny smell. All of the coolant in the coolant tank had gone. So I slowly drove it home. A few days later I took it to a local garage who had a look and said that the head gasket had blown and that it would cost £550 to put right (gasket refacing, pressure testing etc).
  • Astra H 1.6 petrol - Should I have my Repairs done? 8 May 2023 (Forum)
It is a common thing apparently on these. For maintenance purposes I’m also having the water pump, thermostat valve, coolant drain and refil, aux belt, rocker cover gasket, oil change and filters. I service it myself every 5k miles. My repairs will be quite costly so I’m pretty sure I will have it done because the car has never let me down yet.
  • Ds3 - Mot aborted, Refuse to help me 25 Jul 2022 (Forum)
I ended up doing it myself in 10mins after buying some Pliers from Machine Mart up the road and topping the coolant up to get home.   Why do people think? Was I being unreasonable??   Thanks.
  • Renault Clio - Possible vacuum leak? 17 Apr 2022 (Forum)
Any help is much appreciated. The one thing I did realise when I checked under the hood was that the engine coolant tank seemed empty even though I had filled it up not long ago. When I unscrewed the cap, which seemed abnormally stiff/stuck, and the air pressure got in, all the fluid flooded back into the tank - not sure if this means anything too?
  • Volvo XC90 2008 - 44k engine blown - Mapfre Warranty not paying 14 Dec 2020 (Forum)
The T&Cs they quote are under GENERAL EXCLUSIONS: 14e - lack of coolant, lubricant or hydraulic fluids 14g - ingress of foreign matter into fuel, lubricants or cooling system I am at a loss as to what to do.
  • 2009 Ford Mondeo 1.8 Diesel, 125bhp model - Issue with Power Loss 28 Feb 2019 (Forum)
Recently passed its MOT and had a full service at Ford with no faults whatsoever. No oil leaks, fuel leaks, coolant leaks and no split hoses whatsoever so I think whatever's causing the issue is mechanical and internal i.e EGR valve etc. Also recently had the turbo replaced so I suspect that could have caused an issue.
  • Ford Focus2007 1.8 Zetec - Sudden bombardment of problems 8 Apr 2018 (Forum)
I managed to get home and put it on my drive, when I switched the engine off and got out the engine fan was very loud and took a minute or two to slow down and stop. I checked coolant etc and there was no problems. I took it for another spin just now and noticed that the battery light did not go off. The temp gauge quickly went up to just below 90 but nothing concerning as it usually sits around this temperature.
  • Audi Cabriolet - Heater Matrix 12 Aug 2017 (Forum)
The later glass ones fall out after 10 years, I'm told. My most major concern came up this year when I found my windows steaming up, loosing coolant, wet carpets in front wells. IT'S THE HEATER MATRIX!. Major job yes, dashboard out etc. Fortunately my mechanic said "Don't worry, we'll sort it". Can't afford new cars at todays prices, and I was warned of the high oil consumpton on some engines (a litre per 6 hundred miles ish), nearly as bad as my old rotten Ford 105E!.
  • Mazda 6 2006 diesel - White smoke problems 26 Jun 2015 (Forum)
He suggested that I take it to a Mazda specialist (dealer garage) as they will probably have more experience in dealing with the issue. Their diagnosis was inconclusive. Typical causes of white smoke like coolant leaking and serious engine problems (e.g. rings etc) were ruled out. They however said they suspected the EGR valve - but they were not sure as the signs were not apparent. I had to get the car from them because I booked for a day diagnosis.
  • '98 Fiesta Ghia 1.25L 16v - Engine struggling to run 13 Apr 2015 (Forum)
I was driving about town, engine operating fine for the 4 days before and up untill this came about, normal tempts etc, when I got a sudden loss of power and the car started jeking about. IVe checked all around and ive still got a full compliment of oil, and water/coolant. theres no smoke or steam and no smell of petrol. Theres no leaks or bits of metal anywhere so im certain I've not fragged it. theres still fuel to the rail even after 4 days and several starts. This time it struggles to run.
  • 2003 Renault Megane 1.4 16V Petrol - Megane II 1.4 16V Idle and starting problem 3 Feb 2015 (Forum)
Not sure if this is just the air being sucked into the throttle or a leak. I have replaced coils, plugs, TDC sensor, coolant temp sensor and cleaned the electronic throttle body twice and even ran some Cataclean through the fuel but have not managed to resolve the problem. My code scanner has found no codes in the ECU and therefore I have no idea where else to look.
  • Vauxhall Corsa B - Low Compression + Running Terrible 7 Sep 2012 (Forum)
I have a code reader and always get the following code: 00044 - Lean Exhaust I have tried the following with no success:   Replaced coolant temp sensor. Replaced lambda sensor. Cleaned throttle position sensor. Cleaned throttle body. Checked throttle position sensor using Opcom and all seems well there Last summer I serviced it... fuel, oil, air filters, spark plugs, new oil & brake pads Changed HT leads So I ran an compression test the other day and got the following results in bar:   1 -> 5.9 2 -> 6.1 3 -> 6.2 4 -> 6.0 According to the manual the compression ratio is 10.0:1 so seemigly you multiply by 1.38 to get your ideal compression ratio which would be 13.8?
  • Megane Sport Coupe 16V 1.6 - Revs Limited Loss of power 15 Feb 2012 (Forum)
I then gave up and took it to the garage where they cleaned the flywheel sensor and replaced the coolant temp sensor, but they couldn't find what the problem was. Took it to a second garage and he checked the fuel lines, did engine diagnostics etc but nothing was coming up. Completely clueless as to what this is and I don't want to take it to Renault to have my money ripped away from me.
  • Volkswagen Passat TDi - VW Passat Head Change problem 23 Apr 2011 (Forum)
It's been back to the garage that done the work twice and they've said they can't find any problems. I took it to another independent VW specialist who told me it was the coolant temperature sensor, charged me £50 and gave it me back with the same fault! This morning I received a Vag Com lead and was having a nose about, just following some things off the net, and there were no fault codes listed but I discovered the cam timing is running at -4.4 and if what I have read is correct it should be between 0.0 and 0.5.
  • Vauxhall Zafira 1.6 Club 2007 - Exhaust emission warning light 4 Jan 2011 (Forum)
I did the pedal test and it came up with two fault codes 0115 and 571 (I tried it a few times as the flashing is pretty quick) the first one according to the fault code posting on the sticky refers to the Engine Coolant temperature, which I am pretty certain refers to the fact that my thermostat is not working correctly. But I cannot find any reference to the other code. The car seems to be running smoothly in fact I think my petrol consumption has improved since the fault light came on.
  • Renault Clio Diesel 1.5Dci 'Y' Reg - Renault Clio Not firing up; oil can warning light 9 Nov 2010 (Forum)
...I have correct levels of oil and have topped up recently, i have also checked the coolant and topped up there... I've read somewhere that it might be the fuel lines and that they may possibly be clogged up as it is an old car....?  might explain why it cut out on me... I've been recommended REDEX as a first option before taking it in to the garage and just wanted to ask on here if anyone had any ideas all comments greatley appreciated Thanks Wil
  • Seat Alhambra 1.9Tdi 115bhp-Limp Mode 26 Sep 2010 (Forum)
Reading the threads, other people with the same problem have questioned the turbo itself, the Mass air meter (which has recently been changed) the coolant temperature sensor & the ECU. However, a common trait with this seems to be a split, loose or collapsed rubber pipe related to the turbo/valve. l would be gratfull for any info' on exactly which pipe may be at fault, or any other suggestions.
