  • The injector in my Mazda 3 has failed - is this due to using supermarket fuel? 21 Aug 2017 (Ask HJ)
Whilst driving along, my 2012 Mazda 3 1.6d (39,000 miles) suddenly juddered and went into limp mode. I cautiously negotiated to the hard shoulder with...
  • Nissan Juke - VW dealer 20 Sep 2017 (Forum)
I bought a 15 plate Nissan Juke from Volkswagen Dumfries in Dec 2016 with very low miles. When I bought the car I was instructed that should I break down there is a phone number on a sticker on the windscreen and that I had breakdown assistance cover On Friday 15th September having driven to a Dumfries supermarket 30 miles away the car would not start to return home.
  • New car for £6K - Punto ? 5 Feb 2003 (Forum)
What’s the Punto like ? It’s very reasonably priced but is that because it lives up to all the Fiat clichés ? The car by car breakdown doesn’t really address specific reliability issues since it’s a very new car. If anyone has any reasonable input I’d be grateful, please bear in mind that eminently sensible suggestions could be dismissed out of hand because they don’t meet the ill defined criteria of what she wants.
  • KIA Cee'd - feedback on reliability of high mileage ceed / i30 21 Nov 2015 (Forum)
There doesn't seem to be many endemic diesel faults mentioned in HJ's car by car breakdown. Nor do a search on the Internet reveal many diesel specific issues (except the odd turbo failure). For cars of this age, the major failures seem to be electrical related such as, ECUs, ABS, Power steering, or the more usual exhausts, suspensions, etc.
  • Why does the warranty provided with a Volkswagen Golf we bought only cover a maximum claim of £300? 4 Jun 2011 (Ask HJ)
My wife recently bought a low mileage used Volkswagen Golf automatic from Partingtons of Woking. We were very impressed with the pre-handover service received,...
  • Rover 75 - HPI car marked as scrapped problem 9 Nov 2010 (Forum)
No mention of Cat A/B/C/D. Now this came as quite a shock to me as I was given a clear HPI report with the car when bought over two years ago. The car has behaved impeccably and is actually the first car I ever owned that never required a breakdown call out, and I've taken it from 84-122k. Through two MOTS and several services with no unusual or worrying repirs required and bodywork is all consitent with age with no signs of respray.
  • Audi woes 20 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Looking at HJ's car by car breakdown, I see that there is suspicions about the clutch on 130ps Passats. This should also be extended to 130ps A4s. Am suffering some problems on this 10 month old car (10k miles) and although they are fixing them it is annoying.
  • RAC REuropean Cover 24 Dec 2002 (Forum)
I had occasion to call on the assistance of the above when car broke down on journey to the ferry port. This meant that if the car could not be repaired that day a hire car would be provided. Since it was a Sunday it was soon agreed that a hire car should be organised.
  • Peugeot 508 - Peugeot 508 2019 engine and clutch failure 2 Nov 2023 (Forum)
The biggest shock is the bill which is being quoted at £1200! An incredible amount of money and I know of no car outside a Porsche 911 that will cost so much. To further irritation, they are replacing the battery at £175 and the robbing swines at Peugeot breakdown assist charged me £96 for a 2nd tow as the dealer was shut at the time!
  • Citroen Berlingo Multispace (1998 - 2010) - 04 1.9D Cam belt 2 Jul 2008 (Forum)
On enquiring at the local Citroen dealer where I bought the car new, I was told it was out of guarantee so tough luck (or words to that effect). The Citroen customer service in Slough said the same. However, friends in the motor trade tell me that I should pursue the matter on the grounds that the car is not fit for purpose and the cambelt should not fail after 17K.
  • The aircon has failed twice in my Ford Focus - is Ford liable? 4 Aug 2017 (Ask HJ)

  • Are insurance companies taking advantage of the elderly and increasing their premiums? 21 May 2011 (Ask HJ)

  • Small fault, possibly large bill, who should pay? 13 Nov 2011 (Ask HJ)

  • Why does my Focus keeping cutting out? 1 Sep 2014 (Ask HJ)

  • Dacia Sandero 1.2 Ambience - Spare Wheel/Tyre 17 May 2016 (Forum)
I have to say that I have been impressed with it and have had fun driving it (a low power 1.2 petrol vs. my old 2.0d x-type). When my car goes to the big scrappy in the sky I fancy one of these. He didn't get the 'emergency' spare wheel (£100+), but got the standard compressor and jar of glue (as useful as SFA IMHO). Nothing to do with me, except that we live in rural West Wales and my grand-daughters (4 & 6) are often in the car.
  • Ford Focus - Intermittent judder / injector problem 15 Oct 2014 (Forum)
Breakdown man diagnoses faulty injector with machine. I could hear one of the injectors making a ticking / pinking sound so accept this diagnosis.  BTW the problems developed while I was running quite low on fuel, but after filling up (at JET) it seemed to get even worse, before breaking down.
  • Vauxhall Astra H estate (2004 - 2009) - Any experiences with the 1.3 CDTi? 8 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I need it to tide me over for about the next 5 years until Mrs W and I are both fully retired and go to one car - at which point, we'll get something smart that'll see us out. A friend is due to retire shortly and has been offered his company Astra Club estate with the 1.3 diesel engine. He won't be buying it as he has the use of his son's car - and ultimately, he will want something a bit more powerful.
  • thank & where to buy 2nd Hand Caravelle? 26 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Looked at a right snotter of a T4 2.4 just now-yes that's the right size. Also looked properly at the HJ car by car breakdown, searched on here & found the t4 forum & the 2 german T5 ones-thank you once again. But you try finding a 2nd hand T4, let alone T5. Autotrader (so SWMBO says....she's usually spot on about these things..) has bog all.
  • show dogs transport- mpv or Van? 26 Aug 2006 (Forum)
And then 0.2 sec later I thought, my dogs, in airless noisy bumpy truck-no way. So it looks like a people carrier or mpv thing. VW T4 seems to come out well in car by car breakdown. What does the backroom consensus reccomend? Diesel preferred for economy. Speed/ acceleration not vital ( but must be able to get to motorway speed before end of slip road) but ride is.
