Bad overtake? 6 Oct 2010 (Forum)
Despite there being oncoming traffic they still didn't want to let me in. Were they trying to cause a head on collision? If the police officer(s) 'saw everything' then why didn't they stop them instead or at least mention it to me? Although I didn't have a problem with them driving at 30mph, it does raise some concerns and they shouldn't expect others to do the same speed. -
Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - Golf GTI 1.8T - first impressions 25 Mar 2010 (Forum)
After a week on the commute, I've done a brim to brim calculation at 32.8 mpg (against the computer's reported 34.3) which is not bad considering that included a week of some of the worst traffic I've ever seen on the M3, and a dash down to Southampton and back that was certainly not economy minded. Similar use would have had the Volvo well down into the 20's. The 1.8T engine is very impressive, being flawlessly smooth throughout the rev range, and with a very flat torque curve. It will pull from 1500 RPM without hesitation, yet rev cleanly through its range. -
Seat Altea XL - first impressions 21 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Oh, and one gripe I do have, the car only comes with one remote control key, the other is just a normal key. For a car that should be £17.5k, surely you would expect 2 remote control keys? That?s what my Skoda has. Shortly will be taking it to France and back so will report back in a few weeks how living with the car is. -
2004 Pontiac GTO - Motor Trend review 7 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Coupled to the optional ($695) Tremec six-speed manual transmission (an electronically controlled four-speed automatic is standard), the Vette V-8 kicks the GTO with inspiring swiftness. Even wearing its standard M+S tires, our test car scorched from 0 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds and tripped the quarter-mile lights in 13.62 seconds at 104.78 mph--numbers that would leave a 1960s-vintage GTO seeing yellow. When we last tested a supercharged Ford Mustang SVT Cobra (another front-V-8, rear-drive two-plus-two priced in the mid-$30s), it bettered those numbers, reaching 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds and nailing the quarter mile in 13.0 at 110.7 mph. -

Anatomy of a ride 23 Mar 2005 (Forum)
We wave goodbye as each one takes his/her exit home. Road is clear so I manage 110 mph for a couple of minutes. A couple of R-1's and and a Fireblade storm past us with a wave. Cops stare but they can't catch us on their Chinese 125 cc's. GRowlette slows down and pulls alongside as we enter our sub-division and blows me a kiss.. -

Peugeot? Skoda? and others - Search for a car 1 Mar 2011 (Forum)
Conclusion, the A4 would be interesting, in the right trim and engine combination, the A3 (with S-Line pack) was lovely but too small for 5 plus luggage, whilst the Skoda Octavia though the sensible choice, lack internally a sense of quality the others had. The Golfs like the A3 would be too small. -

3 years with a Jazz CVT 29 Aug 2020 (Forum)
So they never using more than about 70% of what's there for the taking, little realising that not only does the Jazz thrive on revs, but as far Honda's go, it isn't actually that high revving at all (the mid 60's S800 was good for 10000rpm)!. Fuel economy for the three years, overall, has been around 47mpg. Bear in mind this is predominantly around town. Out of town would result in about 55mpg, maybe a bit more if i wasn't in a hurry. -
Used cars of the year 13 Oct 2019 (Forum)
Sub £4,000 Mazda MX5 As above, you’ll get an early MK III for this money, just watch for rot. Best MPV £8,000 Ford S-Max 1.6 Ecoboost. Almost diesel economy yet none of the reliability issues they suffer from. Rare though as most are diesel powered which again if bought well a 2.0 TDCi can serve you well but just budget for potential problems. -

30 armed police arrest couple from anonymous call 7 May 2012 (Forum)
We were on the A82 North of Glasgow when in my rear view mirror I saw a police car behind us with flashing lights so I indicated and pulled over to let them pass. As I pulled over I saw in my mirror that there were in the region of 30 or so 4x4’s BMW M5’s and a police helicopter came into view above us. Wow! I said to my partner, something huge is unfolding right in front of us. What could it be? We soon realised that it was us that had instantly become the focus of Glasgow’s tactical firearms unit. -
Dilemma of dilemmas of dilemmas 2 Feb 2012 (Forum)
Toyota 2.2: Large potential to blow head gasket Toyota 2.0: "Don't reckon on very high, trouble-free mileages for these engines" Honda 2.2: Failed turbos, high oil consumption, poor economy, Teves ABS issue. It almost seems like only the old 1990's PSA and VAG 1.9 normally-aspirated engines have assured longevity. It's almost enough to drive me to consider trying to find a mint Peugeot 405 non-turbo. So, my QUESTION 1: Does ANYBODY make a turbodiesel engine that isn't a complete and utter gamble? -

Car breakdown woes 19 Oct 2006 (Forum)
. -- 21st August 2006 Dear [Manufacturer], I am writing to express my extreme disappointment and dissatisfaction at the handling if the breakdown of my car. My [Estate car], registration F*55 **V, was bought new on the 14th January this year, and had it?s 12.5k mile service on the 6th of June this year. This is a long letter, as the series of failings take some effort to reproduce as they are extensive. You may wish to skip to the section where I outline the steps you will take to correct them. -
A very detailed explanation of how DPFs work 2 Jan 2012 (Forum)
In order to comply with the strict European Stage IV emission standard, which now stipulates a further 50% reduction in particulate emissions, an exhaust emission control system is used on the XJ 2.7 liter and S-TYPE 2.7 liter diesel vehicles. The primary component of the system is the diesel particulate filter (DPF), which has been proven to be effective in reducing particulate emissions to negligible levels. -
Why did BMW buy Rover? 3 Nov 2013 (Forum)
As marketing initiatives go, this was a pretty b***** stupid one. It was no wonder that the car – What Car?‘s car of the year – was a slow seller. However, despite how it might appear on the surface, BMW are not stupid. They are masters of the marketing machine. This can only have been a deliberate ploy to give BMW the ability to exit with the assets they had invested in.
