Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate - New wheels 18 Jul 2025 (Forum)
The seats are soft and comfortable, the gear change smooth and it feels like it’ll be a good place to sooth away longer runs in which is really what it’s for. It’s much more refined than the old Avensis and far more efficient. It’s also been very well cared for with only one minor scratch that is really hard to spot. The car is very pleasing to look at inside and out. -
Selling a car with the least amount of hassle . 28 Sep 2024 (Forum)
The issue is that the car is 90 minutes away, so going back is inconvenient plus not too sure I can photo all of the little marks and dents needed by motorway due to the car needing a good clean as it has been sitting so long.. He has called out the RAC tommorow to charge the battery but said the last time it was running there was a clicking noise from the coming from the wheels which I am guessing the breaks from sitting unused ( the discs have rust on them) ... He knows he wont get market value but does not want to give it away ... he just cant handle the stress of selling it privately and prefer it gone sooner than later. -
Second hand van advice 20 Sep 2024 (Forum)
Hi folks, I've just been trawling the internet looking for places to get some advice on buying a second hand van and thought Honest John could be the place :) I'm basically looking to buy a L3H2 second hand van for removals/courier work and just wanted to run my thinking past people who knew a lot more about them. I've narrowed it down to spending around 12k + vat (I'll be financing), from a reputable dealer who offer some kind of warranty and/or RAC check, and looking at vans 2017/18, ply lined, ulez compliant, 70,000 - 90,000 miles. -
Land Rover Discovery Sport - Legal help for a trade in car 13 Sep 2024 (Forum)
The garage manager said I wasn’t paying this out I stopped the money coming to you and said he was running a diagnostic test then hung up on Friday and didn’t call back . What are my rights ?? So there was absolutely no engine light on when we handed the car over and my local garage who I fully trust said there has been no warning lights switched off. -
Switching 2 cars to EV 26 Aug 2024 (Forum)
The V70 is getting a bit long in the tooth and we are spending a lot on upkeep and repairs, the Disco costs a fair bit to run and is starting to develop a few expensive repairs. We would like to change to 2 EV, there is very little extra money available for monthly repayments. Our current use is mostly local with the occasional 100 mile journey. -
Vauxhall Tigra 2009 - Hydraulic pump replaced now boot/roof won't open 19 Aug 2024 (Forum)
After noticing my old pump was leaking (fluid level was fine), So I bought a sc*** one but I couldn't get the clamp off so sprayed wd40 carefully around the edges to remove the sludge and oxidised oil. I also sprayed a bit into the holes where the hydraulic lines go into the pump, let it run out then let it sit for a couple days. Refilled, reinstalled (lines put into pump look untidy but they are all in the correct places and secured. Now the boot won't open. -
Renault Clio - Poor MPG 28 Jul 2024 (Forum)
TBH We don't cover many miles a week and the car is only used for travelling to work which is a 12 mile round trip and we are lucky to cover 5000 miles a year, So the Engine doesn't really get time to get warmed up but after 7 years of owning the car, We have never really had many issues but i would like to increase the MPG. We are going to keep the car for as long has we can since its so cheap to run with Zero road tax -
Replacing my Audi Convertible 13 May 2024 (Forum)
Last Sunday when returning from the coast an enormous "Oil Pressure" warning flashed on the screen. it started running rough and I manged to pull in to the car park of a Halfords. I switched it off and went in to buy some oil in case the pressure was low because of the level. However when I turned the key it just clunked. -
MINI Clubman - Dealers selling privately 29 Dec 2023 (Forum)
Hi All, I recently needed a run around vehicle whilst my car was off road. I used gumtree and found a mini listed under a private sale. he stated the timing chain had been done and a full service history with the last being done by a mini specialist nearby. -
Hyundai Kona - Mild Hybrid Wierdness 13 Nov 2023 (Forum)
The only way to get the engine to stay off at traffic lights seemed to be to knock the car into neutral while the engine was still running, re-engage the clutch and coast in neutral when applying the brakes. The engine then switched off when the car was doing about 10mph and remained off until the clutch was dropped. All this didn't seem to have achieved much in terms of better fuel economy - the mid 40s MPG was very similar to what I've seen in similarly sized normal petrol cars. -
Audi A4 Avant - Adblue Range 31 Jan 2023 (Forum)
So my question is, if I set off with less miles than I know I need to get to this dealer, will the car keep driving, even if it runs out of adblue range, or will it literally stop once it counts down to zero, I assume this won't happen, although it could go into limp home mode, and reduce the power / speed, which will be a bit of a pain if I'm on the M6. -
VW Caddy 2.0 SDI 2010 - Battery replacement 24 Jan 2023 (Forum)
Is this likely to just be due to the terminals, or are there other factors? I also have a split charge relay system (which I fitted myself) running to a leisure battery in the back which powers my pump (I'm a window cleaner BTW). I guess this may be a contributing factor?. I'd also like to point out that I did have the van battery and alternator checked by an auto electrician who said both are fine, but not sure what else the problem might be?. -
Automatic petrol car in £7000 16 Oct 2022 (Forum)
Since my wife will be mostly using it within city from home to office, want something which is: 1) Reliable, doesn't break down often 2) Cheap to run and maintain 3) Cheap to tax + insure for a first time UK driver 4) Doesn't depreciate in value massively as we plan to keep it for atleast 3-5 years before possibly selling it and get a new car So after a month long research and hunt, I've narrowed down my search to the following options: 1) Vauxhall Astra 2010 (10 reg) 1.6 16v Elite ( 28,150 miles ) = £6,680 2) Vauxhall Astra 2012 (61 reg) 1.6 SRI ( 33,603 miles ) = £6,990 3) Vauxhall Astra 2013 (63 reg) 1.6 SRI ( 56,956 miles ) = £6,985 4) Vauxhall Corsa 2010 (10 reg) 1.4i 16v Exclusiv ( 44,000 miles ) = £5,495 5) KIA Venga 2 2011 (11 reg) 1.6 ( 32,000 miles ) = £5,995 6) KIA Venga 2 2011 (11 reg) 1.6 ( 18,000 miles ) = £6,295 7) Ford Fiesta 2011 (61 reg) 1.4 Zetec ( 53,345 miles ) = £6,695 8) Ford Fiesta 2012 (61 reg) 1.4 Titanium ( 54,084 miles ) = £6,690 I'm leaning towards either option 1 or option 5 due to them having low mileage and price. -
VW Tiguan - Advice for long suffering back pain in car 10 Jul 2022 (Forum)
I have looked at the VW Tiguan which seemed to have the right dimensions and space but within a manageable size overall (and looking at the ergoactive seat) but wondering if there were any other obvious candidates I might have totally discounted (not so fussed on make more a case of finding something that has room that wifey can also use for her school runs). Many thanks, Az -
Used car buying advice - trader working from home 16 Nov 2021 (Forum)
Not huge amounts of activity on there but a few likes on each post and no bad reviews or complaints. I have run an HPI check on the car which has come up clean and he has said that he will also provide one. If it means anything the guy seems nice and comes across to me as being honest. Could someone please give me advice on any checks I should do to protect myself? -
Any - Recovery Services - Not Even Same Day! 10 Nov 2021 (Forum)
Possibly a predictable event but a family member had a low battery warning and decided the car, which started, needed a run out. It ran for five miles and died with no power whatsover in a dark country lane. The car, nearly new, automatically phoned JLR who said I believe you have broken down. Yes she said. OK we will pick it up tomorrow! -
Vauxhall Vectra - ECU replacement 30 Aug 2021 (Forum)
We charged the battery overnight and the car started the next day and the warning light had gone out. Took it for a short run and all seemed fine but we were a bit worried that it would happen again so we drove it to the garage and left it to get looked at. Phoned us to say it was the ECU which needed replacing and the option was to have a second hand one which would be guaranteed for six months and cost approx £650 or a new one guaranteed for 12 months costing £850 plus vat. -
Take me back 23 Jun 2021 (Forum)
I want airbags and a strong shell and maybe central locking but that’s it! I want big buttons and simple controls. I want a straightforward engine and running gear that anyone can fix rather than a monstrosity that’s a write-off if it coughs. It would need fuel injection for reliability and it would need a bit more power for the weight but no more than adequate is needed for road use. -
Ford Torneo Connect - Faulty EGR valve or Injector? 27 May 2021 (Forum)
We changed the EGR valve. 9 months later the same problem, I sent it back to the original garage, they said that a faulty butterfly valve to the EGR was stopping it from working properly, so changed that. Now 3 weeks later, same problem again, Check engine light, loss of power, car won´t run properly. This seems to happen when I´m on the motorways. But since then I have moved cities. Took it to a different garage in my new city, they say two errors diagnosed: the same 2 as before: EGR valve and injector 2. -
Jaguar XF - Reliability & Smoothness of 4cyl petrol '18 Jag XF 26 Apr 2021 (Forum)
Is the 2018 XF petrol a reliable car and is there anything I should check for? I'm planning to keep it for a long time so will be running it many years after any extended warranties are available. I was initially concerned about the smoothness of the 4 cylinder petrol engine too - is it as smooth as the 6 cylinder 2.7? In a nutshell, do XF owners think I should go for a last of the line 3.0 or a new shape 2.0 petrol?
