  • Review: Nextbase Duo dash cam (productReview)
Once the camera is in place it needs to be adjusted so the wide angle lens points forward and the zoom lens points rearward – these are clearly marked to make life easier. Once in place you can either run the camera off its battery or connect it to the 12v outlet. Running it off the 12v socket makes the most sense, since it will automatically record when the car comes on, then switch itself off when the ignition is turned off.
  • Top 10: Essentials for maintaining your car at home (Article)
They should last more or less forever, so while there is a bit of expense up front they should save you money on garage bills in the long run, like most of the items in this list. Teng quarter-inch torque wrench – from around £40 Most households will have a socket set and some spanners laying around, but for many car jobs a specific torque setting is important.
  • Review: EGO HPE2000E pressure washer (productReview)
It also means that you can use your existing batteries in the HPE2000E or vice versa.  This is worth remembering as to buy the kit which includes two batteries (and it'll only run when both are installed) and charger will set you back £1,199. If you've already got a couple of batteries with another EGO product, then the HPE2000E can be bought as a standalone item for £649.
  • Top 10: Lego cars...and a few trucks (Article)
Just like the real car, it also comes with a high-speed key, required to lower the rear wing into position for a top speed run. Buy and build your own Lego Chiron and there’s arguably more kudos than owning the real thing.

Lavi CG100 Gas Heater - £38 Whether you have heating or not may well depend on the sophistication of your camper, as well as if you have electrical hook-up or not. Running your engine on a site to warm your camper won’t make you popular, so try this gas heater from Lavi instead. It runs on the same butane cartridges as many gas stoves and is fully portable so you can move it to where heat is needed most.
  • Review: Ducati Monster 797 (productReview)
As for other practicalities, the 16.5-litre fuel tank should see more than 180 miles between fills without running on fumes and pillion seat can just about cope with an average adult for short hops. The digital dash is clear to read and, more relevantly, the details of this Monster are spot on with nods to the past such as the single headlight and humped fuel tank with alloy retaining clasp.

Shenkey inflatable lounger Currently reduced from £60 on Amazon, the Shenkey inflatable lounger is the air bed that needs no pump; instead you hold it over your head and run to catch the breeze, then secure the air inside with the straps. Better still, the Shenkey has a pillow shape at one end, a bottle holder, stake to keep it where you want it and a bottle holder.
  • CHILD CAR SEAT LAWS: What are the current child seat regulations? (FAQs)
Even if your own child is more than 135cms tall, there are things to think about if you ever find yourself giving lifts to other children, on school runs for example: the regulations will still apply. If you think you will be giving a young passenger a lift, and they are less than 135cms, why not check if their parents have a suitable booster seat they can lend you?
  • Review: RazorX Cruiser electric skateboard (productReview)
It also struggles with going uphill, even on slight inclines - so it's best for those with lots of flat, smooth paths available to them. A smaller issue, but one that may bother you in the long run, is the high-pitched whirring noise that you can get a listen of in the video below. Another consideration to bear in mind is that the remote control requires a battery, which comes in the box.

It’s so good, the PCX calls into question the need to own a car in a city as it can deal with year-round journeys in total comfort. It also has low running costs thanks to its 133.9mpg combined consumption, so 175 miles from a tank is easily on the cards. >> Read our full review Kymco X-Town 300i ABS Kymco ably demonstrates you don’t need a big budget to enjoy a maxi scooter with its new X-Town 300i ABS.
  • Review: Airlabs Airbubbl (productReview)
The Airbubbl is hooked up to the car's 12v socket via a USB lead and a dual port 12v adaptor - which is provided. The adaptor has two USB slots, so you can charge your phone or run something like a dash camera at the same time. Unfortunately, our Nextbase 512GW dash cam uses a 12v cable, so we could only use our dash cam or the Airbubbl - rather than using both at once.
  • Top 10: Best tyre inflators 2023 (Article)
All you have to do is to connect the air line to your tyre’s valve, dial in the desired pressure and then hit start. The compressor will then run, pumping the tyre up to the desired pressure. Other benefits include an integrated light, a digital display, a neat transport case and a long 3.5-metre 12V cable. A one-year warranty is standard.
  • Review: Peugeot eF01 folding e-bike (productReview)
You can check the bike's range and charge levels after you've parked up, via a smartphone with the Mypeugeot APP. There are some issues when the battery runs out, with the single-gear eF01 slowing to a crawl under pedal-power. We got caught out on a couple of occasions during our tests, and it took considerable effort to cover the mile or two we had left of our journey without any battery power remaining.
  • OIL CHANGES: How often should I change the oil in my car? (FAQs)
If the engine comes factory-filled with special, very expensive recommended oil, be aware that if the engine is not run-in properly it could use oil at the rate of 1 litre per 650 miles, so, in effect, it changes its own oil four to five times in 20,000 miles at a cost to the owner of around £275. It seems that to allow for these long oil change intervals manufacturers raised the level of contamination and degradation acceptable in the oil.
  • Review: Haynes Build Your Own V8 Engine (productReview)
The crankshaft spins, the pistons go up and down and the whole valvetrain moves as it should. Having already built it you’ll know how these parts mesh together, but with power running through it you can see how they all interact. It even pipes through some authentic V8 sounds recorded from a real engine, although these are somewhat drowned out by the sound of the plastics parts themselves.
  • Review: Campingaz Powerbox Plus 28L electric cooler (productReview)
Admittedly, it takes up a considerable chunk of boot space in a family hatchback, but once up and running it acts like a mini fridge, keeping food and drink cool for hours, even after you've disconnected the power. It'll also fit snugly in the corner of a camper van, while its 28-litres of storage will hold six 1.5-litre bottles of water or enough food to keep a family happy for a night at a camp site.
  • Top 10: Gifts for Petrolheads 2019 (Article)
Tyre pressure readings are accurate and there's a loud beep when the wheels get rolling to let you know the TPMS is up and running. However, we worry about the security of the sensors considering it would only take a couple of minutes to make off with all four. >> Read our full review

How To Be A Motoring Journalist book Richard Porter’s tale of fictional motoring journalist and bombastic curmudgeon Roy Lanchester is part autobiographically and serves partially as an educational toolkit. Porter was the script editor for Clarkson’s Top Gear and, among other things, runs the Sniff Petrol website – a satirical motoring website. The particularities of motoring journalism itself are impressively realistic and well observed though, albeit they're fed into a Spinal Tap machine.
