I am help my daughter to find her very first car for cheap to running and to insure. Her licence is for automatic only, she is really like the Nissan Mirca 2002 1.0 CVT with 63,000 owned by elderly lady with excellent full service history. But when I hear the word CVT sound very complications, I went search on Google to see how it works, when I see a picture of the chain/rubber belt inside the transmission do this required to replace like the timing belt?
  • Suzuki vitara 1.6 1994 auto - Automatic gearbox 18 Jan 2017 (Forum)
I would repeat by slowing down and speeding up again until it would eventually change gear! One it has changed gear once it runs absolutely fine for the rest of the journey. The gear box does have a slight leak yet the levels are fine.  Can anybody shed any light on what the issue maybe or how I can deduce before seeking repair?
  • Peugeot 206 - 1.4 petrol 2001 - MOT emissions fail 14 Jan 2017 (Forum)
My 2001 206 1.4 (petrol) 73K miles has just failed MOT quite overwhelmingly on emissions: Fast idle test: CO: 7.21 (max 0.3), HC 213 (Max 200), Lambda 0.82 (0.970 - 1.030) 2nd Fast idle test: CO: 7.88, HC: 318, Lambda 0.79 Natural Idle test: CO: 7.7 Mechanic thought it would probably be the Cat (which he tells me isn't original) or one of the sensors. Anyone else seen figures as high as this? Car runs fine otherwise, haven't had any problems whilst driving. Your knowledge and suggestions would be much appreciated! many thanks in advance!
  • VW Golf GT TDi MK5 07 - Throttle actuator gone again! 6 Jan 2017 (Forum)
Light was cleared and all worked fine for the last month. Today it had come back in with the same symptoms of an engine over run when turning the car ignition off. I'm guessing it's exactly the same problem but am scratching my head as to what has made it go again?! I also have the infamous traction control light on constantly and yet there is no code showing with this on the reader that read the code for the engine fault...... dashboard is like a Christmas tree!!!!
  • Basic mechanics course advice 20 Dec 2016 (Forum)
Hi all,  Hoping someone can give me some advice. Have had a run of bad luck with mechanics lately, and I really hate not knowing anything about my car as it is my biggest expense.  So, I was wondering if anyone knows of a course I could go on to learn the basics (not even sure what the basics are.....i really need to learn something!!!).
  • Vauxhall Vectra C - Heater only blows cold 30 Oct 2016 (Forum)
The mixer servo moves the mixer flap lever, the two hoses to/from the matrix are both hot and the fan works on all steering. Thermostat must be OK as the car runs between 80 & 90 degrees, depending on type of journey, as it has always done, and I don't think the water-pump can be duff as the car doesn't overheat. Has anyone any other thoughts ?
  • Peugeot 306 XUD9TE Conrod failure 30 Oct 2016 (Forum)
\"Spate of conrod failures on 1997-1998 R and S reg 1.9 XUTD diesels; one case of a late reg T: too many to attribute merely to running with low oil levels. Seems only to affect cars built from April 1997 with DHY (not DHX) serial number engines.\" Please see the pics here ~ http://groups.msn.com/honestjohn/interestingshots.msnw?

  • Ford Fiesta - Flat battery 23 Oct 2016 (Forum)
Car now starts ok, voltage drops only to 10V during use of starter motor. Voltage increases to 13.3V when engine running and revved up. Does the battery's performance under load suggest that it's not the cause of the problem? The car seems to be charging it all right. Expert advice would be very welcome!
  • Nissan leaf range anxiety 16 Sep 2016 (Forum)
Also battery life and their replacement cost is something else else which needs to be included in the overall cost of running. How much range would you want from an electric car before it would suit your lifestyle?
  • Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe - 2003 - Mercedes C230 Kompressor Good Buy? 4 Sep 2016 (Forum)
For various reasons my daily driver is heading into semi-retirement. Purchase price is more than an issue than running costs as  do a very low annual mileage. Coming back from looking at a Ford Focus I saw the above car for sale. It has only had two owners from new (first till first MOT!) and then the current owner.
  • Ford Fiesta - How long does a car last? 30 Aug 2016 (Forum)
Its worth just under 2k and i ideally don't want to spend much more than £500 on any repairs.  All is running fine for now as i do my own basic servicing (oil, filters, plugs etc), but i don't want to be stuck with a massive repair bill.  I'm just after any advice from others of potential problems and costs i may encounter in the near future so i can budget for them or a replacement car.
  • Mercedes C180 2010-ish - Next Car Possibly 13 Jul 2016 (Forum)
Hi all, I've been thumbing through Autotrader and have noticed a few MB C180 petrol models, around 2010, are within my price range. I have a couple of questions if I may? A) does anyone have any experience of owning/running one? B) is the 'German build quality' more myth than fact? C) I notice that the C180s make about 160bhp? Do they all have a supercharger fitted to produce this amount of bhp from a 1.8? My commute will be a 7 mile commute with some congestion, so I'm only looking at petrol models.

Hi,  I've recently bought a 2005 1.8 vvti corolla verso. The car seems to run fine however under throttle there is a noticeable ticking noise which appears to come from the rear left side of the engine (when looking at the bay). In first gear the tick starts at around 1.5k rpm in second its clearly noticeable at 2.5k.

  • SEAT Cordoba 2004 1.9 Diesel - Diesel problem 5 Feb 2016 (Forum)
Once that has happened it will only start once it has been static. In the recent break downs it would then start and run ok a few days later or would need the electrics clearing before starting. Whichever option you used then next big drive or two would cause the same problems!
  • Peugeot 308 SW - Peugeot 308 SW 2012 fault code P1435 1 Feb 2016 (Forum)
Possibly needs replacing but he says that this may not clear the problem. Other than this, the car runs perfectly well and has driven approx 1500 miles since its showed up. Any suggestions?
  • Any - Petrol or Diesel? 21 Dec 2015 (Forum)
So, the calculations need to take into account the overall cost of ownership and assume you sell the car at the end of the period. This should make the diesel more attractive. HJ's method seems OK if you intend running the car into the ground but most people don't do that with a new car. Am I right or have I missed something in the logic?!
