Should we have our BMW Z4 serviced annually or just when the service indicator says we should? 18 May 2010 (Ask HJ)
My girlfriend drives a 5-year-old BMW Z4. She only does about 3000 miles a year and she was wondering about whether or not she should get the car serviced... -
Using the starter to move the car in an emergency 31 May 2023 (Forum)
Anyway, one of the things we were taught was that in an emergency (the example used was flooding the engine on a level crossing) you put the car into second or reverse and use the starter motor to get you to safety. Is there a way that can still be done on a modern car? Certainly on the cars we have we couldn't do it. The starter simply doesn't turn when in gear. -
Can I buy a new car if DVLA have wrong address? 12 Feb 2023 (Forum)
But I need a new car now. Will the out of date details be a problem when buying a new car (will not be trading in the old one as will sort the log book and address out etc before selling/scrapping). Thanks -
Any - Unregulated Solar Car Battery Charger 26 Aug 2021 (Forum)
Insolation can be quite high in Taiwan, plus the car is old low-tech so has little built-in parasitic drain. Any experience or opinions? I thought of making one from a junked solar charged sign-lamp a while ago with 2 6V panels in series, but the amperage output was tiny (about 10mA IIRC). -
automatic cars and pedal confusion 3 Feb 2020 (Forum)
Surely it must be possible to retro fit a limiter on these autos that works as soon as the car is put in reverse set to say 5 mph,of course at 5mph damage can be done but no were near as much as a car careering back at15 to 20 mph.it seems on the face of it quite a simple fix and a lot of accident could be averted i can not see a great problem as most cars fitted with cruise control also have a speed limiter . -
Taxing someone else's car 4 Jun 2017 (Forum)
My son and his partner have gone on holiday and will not be back in the UK until early Tuesday morning. His partner forgot to tax her year old car (no MOT needed) before they left. She will need to drive the 'untaxed' car to work around 9.00am on the Tuesday they get back. The car is insured and does not need an MOT. I can get the VED renewal notice from their house. -
Golf 1.6tdi se DSG - VW warranty 29 Oct 2016 (Forum)
I bought the car as a one year old car and the car has a standard 3 year new car warrnaty. The loose trim i think is due to a poor dealer repair carried out under the first owner where the infotainment was repaired and probably necessiated removal of said trim. -
Toyota Yaris v Citreon C1 15 Feb 2015 (Forum)
My 22 year old daughter needs a car and has £2,000 to spend on the car itself. I can't decide which would be best between a 2007 C1 with 75,000 miles or a 2004 Toyota Yaris with 70,000 miles. I'm looking at both cars tomorrow afternoon, I reckon I can get both down to around £2,000. -
VW Golf mk7 GT DSG 1.4tsi - Auto Hold 29 Oct 2014 (Forum)
I also don't like the term characteristic of the car just because they cannot find a fault. The car is @5 months old and has done this from new (back to dealer 4 times) any advice from members? -
any - px to clear/ any recommendations? 28 Sep 2014 (Forum)
Does this px to clear actually mean the car won't last long and they just wanna get rid of it or is it just they wanting to sell it quick for various reasons not necessarily to do with the condition of the car? Also with a budget of 2000 pounds for the car and insurance, what would be the best car to get. -
Cancelling policy with 3 weeks to go - ncb? 8 Dec 2013 (Forum)
I am buying a new car. Have 3 weeks left on the policy on my current car. I plan to take out a brand new insurance policy for the new car - possibly another provider. As I have not completed this full year with the old car, I only have 10 years noclaims rather than what would be 11 years come end of december. -
Honda CRV 2.0i VTEC ES - Any Advice 18 Oct 2013 (Forum)
After much agonising over what dog friendly car to buy i finally put a deposit down on a 2 year old CRV petrol automatic. Having read all the reviews i found the car to be smooth, pretty good on acceleration and very comfortable. Sure the plastics are so, so inside but it did feel a great car and very spacious. -
Advice please! 26 Feb 2013 (Forum)
Hi People, after searching the web for a car buying forum, I came across this one and it looks the most appealing! I'm after some advice regarding purchasing a new car please, i'm very confused! Right, so I want to buy a used car (maybe 1 year old). -
car incurance ncd 15 Feb 2012 (Forum)
Hi My partner was recently in a company car insurance scheme for a number of for the last 5 years has not had an accident , this year her company took away the company car insurance so we took it out ourself, i thought as she had not had an accident for the last 5 years this qualified as 5 years no claims , anyway about a week after being insure she had an accident with another car currently we are having problems getting proof that she was previously insured with her old company / previous insurer , they did pass a piece of paper we / her employer fill out then date stamp, the insurer now says this is not enough , and that they require official renewal notice form the previous insurer ? -
Corsa 1.4 16v - Water level 23 Apr 2010 (Forum)
In view of the cars age I walked away thinking it must be using / leaking water. The person I was checking the car for spoke to the main dealer (not connected with the car) and was told "oh yes they all do that it is a quirk of that model". -
Timing belts/chains 20 Oct 2009 (Forum)
If it was just a case of slipping on a new belt (like in the old fan belt days), without dismantling half the car, then there would not be a problem. Why do cars now have these belts, surely there is a more reliable way to design without a belt which deteriorates and a pully that wears out? -
BMW 3-Series E36 (1991 - 1998) - A 318se for free? 26 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Given that I drive old cars anyway (my current "good" car is a Mondeo circa 1996) and I need to replace our second car (ancient small Fiat), would it be wise for me to take on this 318se and get it repaired? Do BMWs make good older cars or do they become too expensive to mantain and repair? -
Alfa Romeo 159 (2006 - ) - Alfa 5 pot Diesel Cambelts 31 Jul 2008 (Forum)
I shudder to think of the cost.I remember driving a Marea estate hire car a few years ago with the petrol 5 and it looked tight in the bay. That was quite a nice old bus but I suspect if the governments retro car tax goes ahead many will be scrapped(£400 a year for a car worth a few grand but I digress... -
The last car with . . . 20 Jun 2008 (Forum)
In ifithelp's "That's something you rarely see these days" thread, pmh wrote "What would be interesting, is to take all the items listed in this thread and identify the last car to which they were fitted." Which got me thinking. What (& when) was the last mainstream car marketed . . . without power assisted steering as standard? with an old school diesel engine (i.e. not common rail / pd / high pressure)? -
How NOT to buy a car! 12 Mar 2008 (Forum)
The only explanation I can come up with is that an 8 yr old diesel Mondeo must be worth a few quid in Poland. Cheers DP
