  • Fair sentence for 139mph biker? [Read Only] 24 Jul 2009 (Forum)
http://tinyurl.com/HDM-nicked A MOTORCYCLIST who was followed by police at speeds of up to 139mph on an East Riding road has been jailed for dangerous driving. Saxby was jailed for 12 months, disqualified from driving for four years and ordered to take an extended driving test after that. I doesn't mention the charged rider was doing that speed, but I suppose it makes better headlines.
  • Auto or Manual ? 5 Jul 2009 (Forum)
I prefer auto transmissions, always rent them, but own a manual because SWMBO was given the keys of an auto to move without any thought of instruction by her boss and frightend herself (twice). How do I convince her that autos are easier to drive than manuals. I have offered to rent an auto to teach her how to drive one, and explained the auto driving licence limitations due to manuals being more difficult to drive. Any other ideas? New car on the horizon, I want auto, she wont entertain.
  • BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - 05 2.0d Multi vee drive to air con compressor 14 Apr 2009 (Forum)
When I found the air con not operating, I found the drive belt from the crankshaft to the compressor had come off. Is there an adjustment for the compressor to alter the tension of the drive belt? I cannot figure out how the belt came off the pulleys, as it was too 'tight' to slip over them and operate the key to crank it back in to place.
  • Charging for test drive! 30 Nov 2008 (Forum)
I was just chatting about our buying experience at the other dealer, which was really bad, and he said that they now charge £30 for a test drive. Now I can't make up my mind whether this is sour grapes, a sales technique or fact. Has anyone else ever heard of a charge for test driving prior to purchase of a brand new car?
  • Parking in front of drives 27 May 2008 (Forum)
    - Highway Code point 217 However, I'm not clear re having your droppedkerb partially blocked, ie, you want to turn left, but can't because a vehicle is artially blocking your drive & have to go right. Same scarion when reverse parking, you have to turn around & reerse park. What about a high, big van parked right on the edge of your drive & making it dagerous to pull outas you are unable to see traffic?
  • Only Disqualified 18 Times! 9 Mar 2006 (Forum)
My local rag has today a report on a driver who had been banned from driving 17 times, had been caught 3 times for drink driving, had 16 convictions for driving without insurance, 5 for TWOC'ing, and 4 for vehicle theft apart from that he was as pure as the driven snow. He has now been banned again and sent down for 20 months.
  • Is it OK to drive weak clutch? Golf mk4 3 Nov 2005 (Forum)
My clutch is 'weak' aparantly, it's very hard to get it into 1st and reverse (physically it's very stiff). I'm wondering if I should be not driving the car before I get the new clutch fitted in case it damages something else like the gearbox or something? It drives fine apart from this and changing between other gears is OK too... Any opinions welcomed apart from 'you should have bought a Honda' etc!
  • Regular driving tests 10 May 2005 (Forum)
The "Tonight with Trevor McDonald" programme last night discussed the subject of yearly driving tests for those over 70. A large proportion of accidents are the result of the lack of experience and wisdom (not increased reaction times), which means the younger and/or less experienced driver.
  • Driving without lights 5 Jan 2003 (Forum)
Incidently I read that the Polish driver who caused the accident where the police stopped pursuit was driving without lights.
  • Erratic driving. 17 Jan 2020 (Forum)
With all the anti older drivers attitude most of us who are senior drivers take our driving seriously and practise good habits. I saw a guy with superb car control the other day, he was weaving in and out and avoiding other cars by inches at high speed, tailgating 'til the offending car got out of his way.

  • Bad Driving - Overtaking past road furniture in carriageway 29 May 2016 (Forum)
For the 3rd time in the past few months  I have had cars  and 1 van overtake me and pass the refuge in the middle in the opposing  carriageway (fortunately empty at the time) in various places on 3 different occasions. This must go down as dangerous driving, surely!
  • Driving position 8 Oct 2013 (Forum)
Which current small cars give a high driving position. I know the large MPV's do but I want something smaller. I have been considering the Venga/ix20, which, although I haven't driven, presume they do have a highish position.
  • any - insurance claim 18 Nov 2012 (Forum)
my sister has had her claim rejected because she was not wearing her glasses when driving, even though her sight is good and she can read the numberplate at the correct distance because she had not noticed the caveat on her driving licence that says she must wear glasses when driving.
  • Cars famous people drive 26 Jan 2012 (Forum)
All over the world, from intellectuals to farmers, people loved Saabs for their shape, safety and sheer character. Just wondering who drives what today?
  • Good driving? 14 Dec 2010 (Forum)
I've just seen this http://uk.cars.yahoo.com/10122010/36/bus-driver-shrugs-snowy-hill-0.html Is this skillful driving, or was it the bus that made it look easy? The wheels did slip in places but the driver managed to keep the speed quite high. If there wasn't much grip then I don't think the bus would have been doing that speed.
  • VW Polo - HJ driving one handed 22 Aug 2010 (Forum)
As an avid reader of HJ's road tests and Telegraph column I enjoyed the polo 1.2TSI video. I was a little surprised though to see him drive the whole time one handed with his left hand presumably resting on the gear lever. Not good practice surely ?
  • Driving test examiner sues for whiplash 19 Feb 2009 (Forum)
A driving examiner is suing for damages after claiming he was hurt by the worst learner driver he has ever seen. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/edinburgh_and_east/7895353.stm?lss A current case so I guess no comments directly about it until the case is resolved.
