Honda - CBF 1000 motorcycle - smoky, and now won't start. 27 Mar 2011 (Forum)
Anyway on the return journey bike did not feel quiet right, like it was being restricted or holding back. when I returned home I gave the bike a good rev while idling...lo and behold I got the occasional puff of black smoke from exhaust. My first thoughts were contaminated fuel...so I emptied the tank with on of them suction pumps(the type you suck engine oil from car sumps without removing sump plug). I then got a gallon of fresh fuel and put it in the tank......tried it on the starter and bike refused to fire.....I eventually flattened the battery trying to start it, I have it on an optimate as I speak. -
Fiat Bravo 1.2 16v Trofeo - W Reg - Fiat Bravo not starting when hot 28 Apr 2010 (Forum)
Could anyone help as I am at the end of my tether now and don't want to spend huge amounts of money taking it to a garage, some people I have spoken to including a retried mechanic who has actually witnessed the problem believes possible fuel starvation? but when I flood the engine after trying to start it you can certainly smell fuel, another chap who knows a little about cars wonders if it's electronic, possibly fuel sensor? Does such a thing exist and where is it best to start would try anything and be very greatful for any diagrams. -

Volvo S60 (2010 - ) - Direct injection petrol engine - a good idea? 17 Dec 2008 (Forum)
From HJ's breakdown: "The engine that Volvo Cars has chosen for the Volvo S60 Concept is a four-cylinder 1.6-litre petrol unit using high-efficiency GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) technology and producing 180 horsepower. In a conventional petrol engine, fuel is injected into the inlet manifold ahead of the inlet valves. With direct injection, however, the fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber under high pressure. The engine in combination with a range of other technical measures makes it possible to cut carbon dioxide emissions to 119g/km." -
Skoda Superb (2008 - ) - DSG not as efficient as was promised? 15 Sep 2008 (Forum)
The only reason I can see for the consistent increase of ~10% in fuel consumption is that the DSG may be changing gear at different points to a manual gearbox on an economy drive. Is this the best explanation, or am I missing something? -
Audi A6 + RS6 (1997 - 2004) - 01 1.8T Over Fuelling ! Audi expert required. 8 Aug 2008 (Forum)
So i had a new Lambda Sensor fitted - still the same, so then had a new Mass Air Meter - Then a new Thermostat and i also had the Throttle Body cleaned - still the same problem, The EML still comes on MPG is awful and a very strong smell of fuel coming from the tail of the exhaust. How can it be running Too Lean when it is running Too Rich ! So my garage put me in touch with a Bosch Service Centre who worked on the car for 6 hours, doing all checks relating to Fuel and Air. -
Retrospective views road transport and Electricity 16 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Sounds improbable of course, but if 60 years ago (Instead of ripping it out of cities) electricity had been embraced, surely solutions would have been found. The current focus of adding bio fuels to regular fuel just seems so short sighted given the number of vehicles that need fueling. Once down the petroleum path, difficult to go back... But any comments or any other examples of where motoring and the road transport system could have been different to now? -
rover 416i keeps cutting out - help 26 Jan 2007 (Forum)
hi, i have a rover 416i which i brought early last year. for several months it would cut out, when coming to a junction or stopping. it would re start agin straight away and then be ok for a few days or even weeks. i finally took it to my local garage in the summer and they told me the head gasket had gone, which i had replaced, but when i got it back the problem still continued. some days it is fine, others it can happen several times in a single journey, it also started to kind of splutter just beofre it would cut out, as if the fuel was not getting through, i had an xr31 that had a similar problem and it was the fuel sensor, anyway a week before christmas it cut out, but when i tried to restart it it must have taken about 10 times of turning over before it finally fired up and then drove like a pig, so i called the aa out, who were completely hopeless, and followed me to my local garage (again) who did the head gasket for me. as the problem is intermitant i fully understand they would need it for a while to get the problem to happen for them, however 6 weeks on they still have my car, and have told me they have tried lots of things and have had no joy, there next attempt will be a fuel pump to be fitted on monday - at a cost of £70 plus labour etc, on top of the labour they are allready charging. they seem to be stumped at what the problem is, which is not at all reassuring, and to be honest i cant afford these repairs as it is, witout them doing work that is not needed. can someone please help with what this problem may be??????? -
The Popularity of LPG Conversions 23 Oct 2005 (Forum)
With the increase in fuel prices, are LPG conversions becoming more popular? As some of you may know, I have a 3.4 (petrol) Landcruiser Colorado. Now in the interests of fuel costs alone it may not be worth my while to do a LPG conversion; With an annual mileage of around 10-12K and assuming I'm only going to keep the car for another 2 years or so, I might not recoup my initial outlay. -
Poor starting Cavalier Diesel 23 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Things i'm thinking are an air leak somewhere between the turbo and the head, but also could it be drawing air in on a fuel line somewhere, although wouldn't this result in a fuel leak? (i did read on another thread that a chap with a 1.6 diesel cavalier had a chafed fuel line which caused a similar problem) I'm fairly sure its not glow plugs, as its difficult to start when hot too, and also down on power. -
Nisssan Micra (K10) carburettor problems 27 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Hi All, I have a J reg Nissan Micra LS 1.0l and until recently has been a wonderfully reliable and economic car. It has been suffering from problems similar to those reported by drivers of the later micras (fuel injection - air mass meter calibration errors) but of course this isnt fuel injected. Basicly for the last month or two, the car has had trouble keeping an idle speed, when stopping at junctions the engine stalls, also when, for example, changing down a gear and accelerating onto a roundabout, it also temporarly tries to stall but then picks back up. -

Used diesels 1 Jun 2021 (Forum)
Had he stuck with a simple petrol version he would’ve spent a couple of hundred quid a year extra on fuel but saved a large four figure sum on repairs. Moral of the story, stick with petrol when buying a cheap used car. -

Honda CR-V 2.2 I-CDTI diesel - Main relay location 25 Jun 2020 (Forum)
Does anyone know where the main/PGM-FI relay location is on a 2009 Honda CR-V 2.2 CDTI (diesel). there should be one (main) relay in the under hood fuse box and another (fuel pump) in the cabin fuse box. But both fuse boxes do not have either relays. this is the cabin fuse box. It only has 1 relay for the power windows. The starter cut and fuel pump relays are missing...
