  • A Grand Monday: Vauxhall Calibra 2.0 16v 3 Dec 2018 (News)
It’s very easy to underestimate the impact the Vauxhall Calibra had on the car industry at the time of its launch in 1989, but it was much more than just a coupe version of the Cavalier. It was the car that reinvigorated the coupe market in Europe after the demise of the Ford Capri two years earlier, which had left a yawning gap in the affordable mainstream two-door market, and was also the most aerodynamic car ever made, with a drag co-efficient of 0.26 - a record it held until it was usurped by the Honda Insight in 2001.  It was also a strikingly handsome car, although its Vauxhall underpinnings have, sadly, seen most of them now rot away - rear body corrosion being the biggest killer of Calibras.
  • A Grand Monday: Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 LS 8 Oct 2018 (News)
There’s a lot of nostalgia out there for Vauxhall’s first UK market Corsa, which celebrates its 25 th birthday this year. Marketed as a car that made supermodels jealous, the little Vauxhall certainly looked the part, even if some of its rivals were a bit sharper to drive. Buried in the classifieds this week is  a £595 example that definitely needs to find an enthusiast  to love and cherish it.  It’s not perfect – the black underseal on both sills needs thorough investigation to see what nasties it might be hiding – but it’s an astonishing car thanks to its full main dealer service history, with its last visit to a Vauxhall main agent as recently as March 2018.
  • A Grand Monday: Honda Legend 2 Apr 2018 (News)
By the time the third generation Legend appeared, though, Honda’s relationship with Rover Group had come to an abrupt end, and despite outwardly similar appearances, the 1995-on Legend was a completely different car to its predecessor. It was an oddball choice and a slow seller in the UK, despite having a wonderful V6 powerplant that was loosely related to that in the NSX supercar. Staggering depreciation and a lack of public awareness of the car, along with just the one engine choice, meant it was always something of a fringe option in the executive car market, but those who bought a Legend came away with a car that was handsome, quick and extremely refined, along with a surprisingly agile chassis.

Oldest car on show is a Richmond Red Austin A105 - one of just 500 Westminster saloons that in 1958 and 1959 were sent to the Kingsbury Works to receive a luxurious new interior. The result was a car to compete with Rover and Jaguar and this example is one of three left.

  • Gallery: St James Concours, London, 5-7 September 25 Sep 2013 (News)
The concours circuit is a busy one - but it looks like Pebble Beach, Amelia Island and Villa d'Este have been joined by London. For the second Concours of Elegance, 61 of the world’s rarest motor cars – many of them never seen before in this country – graced the gardens of 300-year old Royal palace Marlborough House, and drove through London. Lead by Royal patron HRH Prince Michael of Kent driving the 1933 Napier-Railton 24 litre Special, and with the oldest dating from 1907, nearly all of the cars in the Concours were driven - in a spectacular convoy from Buckingham Palace down The Mall - by their owners into the gardens on the opening morning.
