  • Illiteracy and the driving test 7 Apr 2010 (Forum)
I just wondered if illiterate people are allowed to drive. A neighbour of mine is semi illterate and has just passed his theory although I'm not sure how as he can hardly read. Is he given a verbal test? Then there is the question of reading road signs and hazards signs what happens there?
  • Automatics-Drive or Neutral? 14 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Just been wondering, in the interests of transmission longevity, what's the best method when stopped at a red light or in queueing traffic with an auto? Slip it into neutral or leave it in drive with the parking brake on? (unless the guy behind has his front foggies on-then give 'em a tan I say!) ;-)

  • Graded driving licence 20 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Should we have graded car driving licences in the UK? First 2 years after test, less than 70 BHP normally aspirated. 2 to 5 years after test up to 120 BHP. Over 5 years unlimited. Or would this upset the "celebs".
  • Do cars learn from your driving habits? 1 Aug 2008 (Forum)
I was reading something the other day about a car with an adaptive automatic transmission and I now wonder how common are adaptive bits and pieces in the electronics so that the car does learn how you drive. Any thoughts?

  • Automatic Only Licence 29 May 2019 (Forum)
A lady I know is coming up to 40. She started learning to drive half a lifetime ago but never followed it through. Now with a young son she is keen to start driving as public transport cannot be relied on. She wants to go for an automatic licence but her partner (who coincidentally drives an automatic) wants her to go for a manual one.

  • Declining HGV Driving Standards? 12 Dec 2014 (Forum)
Without wishing to be negative there does seem to be a fair number of HGV drivers driving to a very poor standard not expected by someone that drives for a profession.  Is this down to pressure of work? Perhaps furstration due to being set difficult delivery targets? Has anyone else noticed the declining standards?
  • None - Refresher Driving Lessons 31 Oct 2013 (Forum)
She got back behind the wheel as soon as she reasonably could do so, but remains rather nervous, particularly on dual carriageways / motorways where she is in mortal dread of somebody lurching out in front of her (the cause of her original accident). What would be the best route for some refresher and advanced driving lessons? Bear in mind she had been driving happily for nearly 20 years beforehand. I''m not sure if IAM is the right solution.

  • Ford Fiesta (2000 - 2002) - 01 1.8 O/S drive shaft bearing 29 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Got a 51 reg courier van (fiesta) with a rumble on the O/S drivers side drive shaft,it's the bearing that's bolted to the engine. Can I repalce the bearing or do I have to replace the entire shaft?? I'm driving the van over to the south of Spain and this is very annoying as it's causing bad wheel wobble and vibration.
