  • Recall will it pass MOT? 11 Jan 2025 (Forum)
My MOT is due in two weeks, but the dealer is currently low on stock of the recall item, which might be the fuel pump. Will the car still pass the MOT despite the recall issue, or will I need to wait until the parts are available?
  • Audi A3 Sportback TDI - Diesel Emission MOT Test 4 Aug 2024 (Forum)
It failed last year on the emission test. Used Dipetane since then, Forte Diesel Cleaner in with new fuel filter when serviced.  Also sprayed EGR cleaner into intake. My annual mileage is around 1000 miles so not ideal but shame to sc***. Searching on the internet I came across a chart that  for vehicles before 2008 turbo are tested as per plate if present or 3.0m-1 if lower.
  • Austin allegro - Off the road at last 26 Jan 2024 (Forum)
https://www.gazette-news.co.uk/news/24066905.colchester-police-prohibit-vintage-car-driven/   This one made me smile, I have seen the car lots of times over the past few years. Petrol tank rusted out and removed, with a fuel cell (rally type) fitted in the boot. Steering lock removed as well as lots of bits of the dash. No actual need for an MOT or "tax" but having been behind it often, not a "smoker" and surprisingly nice chap driving it.
  • Buying advice please 26 Nov 2022 (Forum)
Hi all. I have a Kia Sorento mk1 at present. It's a superbly comfortable car to drive but with fuel prices the way they are I'm going to get a different car in the next 6 months.  I need the space. I have to carry around large rotavators and bee hives so I'm looking at Citroen Berlingo or Fiat Doblo.
  • £25k Lada Niva? 24 Aug 2022 (Forum)
The biggest changes came in 1993 or thereabouts when the old carb fed 1.6 was replaced with a (slightly) less thirsty fuel injected 1.7, and the tailgate was extended to open right down to the bumper (rather than to the top of the rear lights)!.
  • any - Tyre Tread depth. 1 Aug 2021 (Forum)
I recently replaced mine with a set of leading brand tyres. On line facts give noise level, braking and fuel consumption performance. I was surprised when I measured the as new tread depth as 6mm. giving only 4mm of wear. I can remember getting 50,000 miles out of a set of Michelin tyres many years ago (unfortunately no recollection of tread depth.)
  • Tyre pressures and Motorway speeds 5 Apr 2021 (Forum)
Many years ago it seemed the advice was to pump up tyres an extra so many psi if you were going on a long high speed journey. Not sure why. My Superb has a tyre pressure label in the fuel flap that states 32psi as minimum, an "eco"/passengers with luggage setting of 36 psi and a higher pressure still if fully laden to the gunnels. All pressures to be checked when tyres are cold of course What comments on whether sustained high speed (read 70 mph motorways) merit an elevated (cold) pressure and by how much.
  • Vauxhall Combi CDTi 2011 1.3 diesel - Test if engine has seized 24 Dec 2020 (Forum)
No Crank - no start - AA report P008A - Fuel low pressure circuit - pressure too low. Sporadic faults. Engine seized. Car just stopped (cut-out) - no loud noises or smoke or overheating. I want to confirm if the engine has seized. Test1. Tried:  putting gear in 5th - handbrake off - tried pushing van - won't budge.
  • The holy grail or just fantasy for under £5000 ? 21 Sep 2020 (Forum)
I am looking for a stylish even sporty looking petrol or hybrid car ( 2, 2+2 or 4 seats ) for under £5000 that is good looking, at least reasonably fuel efficient and won't cost be an arm and leg in repairs and servicing...and I am not knocking in any way the standard cars like fiestas, golf etc but something different  Is that possible ?
  • Detailed car choosing website? 18 Jul 2020 (Forum)
I'm talking of things like power folding mirrors, heated seats, reversing camera, heated steering wheel etc. I know that sites like autotrader can give you options of engine size, fuel type and gearbox etc but I am trying to find somewhere that lists all of the features on a car including optional extras and then lists all of the makes and models that have those features? Hope someone can help?
  • Mercedes - k**** Cowboy 27 Jul 2019 (Forum)
Actually slightly lacking in the full cowboy crassness which might limit sales stateside, but here in Taiwan the badge is a bringer of big bling and it'll probably do quite well. In the UK perhaps fuel prices impose some market restraint? When MB did rugged engineering it might also have been a practical choice for people who actually needed a truck. These days, not so sure,, As a foreigner I'm not allowed to have a truck, else I'd be straight down to the dealer, obviously.
  • MG ZS 2017 - 5 Month update and 5000 miles 7 Jun 2019 (Forum)
So, Over 7200 miles now, Still happy with fuel economy,  Car driving well and still around 40-41 mpg, which is entirely acceptable given the size/weight of the car. Some niggles, minor but still niggles,,, retaining hook for string of parcel shelf on tailgate broke. very minor...
  • Vauxhall Astra 1.9 CDTI (2009) - Astra fault code 1 Nov 2018 (Forum)
On my way to work this morning, the car with spanner light came on, and I’ve done the pedal test to find the fault code which is ECN 018007. According to a code reader this is a fault with the fuel temperature sensor so I’m just wondering if this is something they’ve done, is it possible that they have knocked something whilst working on the gearbox and how serious is the problem? Many thanks

  • Dacia Sandero Stepway - super unleaded petrol and small turbo engines 20 Jul 2018 (Forum)
I was wondering if anyone has had experience of using super unleaded fuel in a small turbo engine. did it run smoother, accellerate smoother or go quicker ? I am asking as i had no choice but to put super unleaded in my car and the engine feels like it accelerates smoother now. no hessitance while going through the rev range (like the blow off valve is modferating the boost pressure) but My car only has 700 miles clocked up so it could just be the engine is still bedding in.
  • Tyres, cheap or expensive? 7 Apr 2018 (Forum)
I have previously always fitted GoodYear Efficient grip tyres as they have a good balance of reasonable cost, fuel efficiency and low noise. However, they don't seem to last as long as I think they should. Am I better off going for really cheap tyres or something like Michelins that are reputed to last ages.
  • Skoda Fabia Estate or other - Which car 27 Mar 2018 (Forum)
I've looked at the Fabia estate diesel and the Ceed diesel, and thought the Fabia looked perfect due to its low tax and fuel economy. However I've then read about engine faults on them.  I need to be looking at older cars around 2006 / 8 ish.  What can you suggest please which will do over 55 mpg and be reasonable to tax.
  • Diesel benefits for low mileage user 26 Jan 2018 (Forum)
I disagree my wife does around 8000 miles a year mixture of school run and a weekly run of 60 mile journey. Her average mpg in the fiat was 31.2 she is now averaging 52.2. That is a huge saving in fuel, (she is paying &20 instead of &140 in tax and the car works out at no more a month for her.
  • Hyundai Getz 1.3 cdx 03 - Getz rev counter not working 28 Oct 2017 (Forum)
My dad's Getz suddenly decided to have the Rev counter needle not moving including the fuel gauge which is stuck on the lowest point (it is a quarter full) I drove the car to see if the speedometer was working at it isn't.  The electronic trip display isn't showing anything either. The battery is fine as all the lights are working.
