  • Merc W124 Estate Buying advice 27 Jan 2006 (Forum)
To test, is it as simple as getting a friend to climb in the boot and see it the car comes back up, and is it essential that the s/l works? (thought the clunk on the 230 could be a solved by changing the shock a'?)Any general advice on the cars very much appreciated - I know there are people here that are big fans. Frustrated as there are few around and wild price variations.
  • Classics or rubbish ? 25 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I could go on... come on folks lets have some input Another point of note there used to be a excellent car show (note not used the word classic) by me in Llanberis (Snowdonia) and it was more a celibration of motoring It had every thing from Hillman Minxes rubbing shoulders with XJ220'S dodge vipers astons new and old Rather than rows & rows of teadeous BMC's & the like
  • Two cars to one. 23 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Wife has a smart cabrio - good for her daily commute and parking in urban areas - cabrio good fun in summer. They need something between the two. Have considered a Mini Cooper S. Convertible Pluses - still quite small so easy to park, still a cabrio, good for longer journeys. Negatives - really only a two seater, small boot (they don't want to use the van for shopping), £20,000 price tag.
  • Why not to to travel by train 6 Jan 2006 (Forum)
That was just silly, so I asked for Standard class which came to £90 for two separate singles (bizarrely, that?s cheaper than a single). Luckily for me, my company will reimburse the £90 and luckily for them the value of the client work I did on the train will more than recoup the cost. But ?.. would anyone spend £90 of their **own** money for a 75 min journey?
  • Best book for the mechanically illiterat 25 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Can any of the Backroomers recommend me an easy-to-read book that will fill some of the gaps in my mechanical knowledge? I s´pose the ultimate aim would to be able to do more basic maintenance, but the initial priority is something to read rather than a specific Haynes manual. The kind of thing I would have in mind would be maybe something like the ´Internet for Dummies´ book, but obviously with a mechanical theme.
  • Ugly, ugly, UGLY drive way! 13 Dec 2005 (Forum)
On route I saw the most ugly, ugly UGLY drive way. Basically, you have a bog standard red brick 1930's end of terrace house with a frontage of no more than a Mondeo's depth. The 3 sided brick wall was constructed of yellow stock(to go with the red obviously!)it was way too high for a front brick wall, and had 6ft pillars with concrete lions atop as gateposts.
  • 406 V6 coil (again) 24 Nov 2005 (Forum)
In the service history, it was recalled to have all six coils replaced, coil 5 was replaced three months ago in Gdansk. I know it?s only a ten minute job once the right faulty coil has been diagnosed, would I be able to do it myself in future if I carried a couple of spares? How involved is it? I can change brake pads, oil and put shelves up and I carry a basic tool kit.
  • No MOT Certificate 8 Sep 2005 (Forum)
My car had it's MOT yesterday. It's the first one I've had since the mid 90's, as I've always got rid of the cars before the 3 year old mark. I was not given an MOT certificate. The car is funded through a Private Contract Plan, through VW Finance. I was told at the dealership that the MOT certificate would be sent to VW Finance.
  • 3500 miles in a week! 1 Sep 2005 (Forum)
    - Or 8 days to be precise; anyone else covered this kind of distance in so short a time?! Went from S. France to Copenhagen, dropped off the family then rented a Mondeo for 3 days work all over Sweden. Then back to France. High spot - getting an indicated 145mph out of the S60 on a deserted German motorway in the wee small hours...
  • spark plug electrode 13 Jun 2005 (Forum)
about two weeks ago my car`s engine started to make a rattling noise. As I was in the middle of a roadworks with no possibility of stopping I carried on driving at a slow pace(approx.2k revs.)After about 3/4 mile the rattling stopped,I drove on gently, checking oil and temp.dials.Both normal.
  • Company Car Tax - 2006 Non-EuroIV 5 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I have read and heard recently about the fact there are to be some changes next year on company car tax for diesels but cannot seem to get a clear idea of what is to happen and how it will affect me. Can someone help please? I drive a 2005 Volvo S60 D5 S which is a Turbo Diesel, 2.4 litres with a CO2 of 166g. With the Diesel surcharge on company car tax of 3% because it's not Euro IV this makes it taxable at 23% of it's list price for the 2005/06 Tax year.
  • Free car - but no keys / V5 ??? 27 May 2005 (Forum)
m not asking for comments on how rubbish they are, before you all start furiously tapping away on your keyboards?!) I have been offered a 1972 Beetle for free, on the understanding that I collect it. It?s been laid up for over 5 years and is pretty rotten. Anyway, the downside is there are no keys (it is unlocked) and no V5. I will be given a letter from the current owner (a local radio station) to confirm they have the legal right to give it away, but are there any other problems anyone can think of?
  • Pierburg 2E2 help needed 24 May 2005 (Forum)
On longish drives at a constant speed of about 80mph the car will start to misfire, getting worse until I stop and let it magically fix it?s self, if this happens it really eats fuel. 3. engine tends to idle to fast sometimes I know some people will say bin the pierburg and get a weber but they are very hard to get hold of at the minute due to production problems, so if anyone has a second hand 32/34 DMTL let me know.
  • Lord Sir Alex Trotman 5 May 2005 (Forum)
What is even less well known is that the had a personal hand in the ill-fated buyout attempt of British Leyland in the late 70's. (Ford eventually got cold feet and pulled out.) What is poigniant for me personally is I met Alex Trotman at Ford World Headquaters in Dearbourn Michigan in 1996 albeit briefly. A genuine car guy and not a bean counter IMO and will be sadly missed by his family, ex colleagues and friends.
  • Ipod/Similar needed for car - advice plz 15 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Hi, I am due to start a new job soon and am looking to buy a device which will play all my MP3's that will work with my company car. Being a demonstrator, we are not allowed to put anything aftermarket in them - i.e. handsfree kits, aftermarket radios etc.. so it puts me in a dilema A friend of mine has an IPOD with something called an ITRIP - which plugs into the IPOD.
  • Another waterworks problem - Maestro TD 4 Apr 2005 (Forum)
In the last few months I?ve noticed that the coolant hoses on my wife?s Maestro TD are still pressurised after standing overnight. Opening the rad cap and the air blows out. I replaced the radiator cap with no improvement. The engine is running perfectly including the heater.
  • Carte blanche 21 Mar 2005 (Forum)
I think mid-size is preferable to mini (and likely to be better value) and my happy experience with the family Mazda makes me look favourably upon 323's and similar. I like my old Audi, too, but I cheerfully admit to bias, which is why I'm asking you lot... What say you all?
  • Lazy or crazy? 1 Mar 2005 (Forum)
I have since discovered that I have a client, also a publishing director, who lives in the apartment block right next to where he works. Thinking back to my track-running days at school, I?d guess it?s a distance of between 100-200 metres and he drives it everyday also in a large Mercedes. In addition, he has to negotiate a tricksy underground carpark at either end of his journey. Personally, I think this wonderful disregard for the environment, his health and his car should be applauded.
  • Citroen C4 - is this a good deal? 27 Feb 2005 (Forum)
List price for all of this was £17,870 (scary for a Citroen!). I've been offered £2000 for my 156k VW Passat 1.9TDi 'S', which is a 1997 model on a 'R' plate. Incentives include £1600 cashback from Citroen, and the dealer has offered to throw in metallic paint for free, along with another £300 off for good measure.
