  • Ford Galaxy - max milage on a clutch, offers? 13 Apr 2010 (Forum)
Cos I got 215,000 on mine & it is still good, despite occasional heavy (3500kg) trailer towing, a lot of town stop start driving, plus 300miles of using in lieu of brakes, ie down through the gears. Mind two adolescents learning may just be its death knell. Cheers M

Most of the low cost companies won't quote. Any views on this? I've asked for the quote on the basis of an "uprated brakes" modification..

  • Grease for plastics 5 Apr 2008 (Forum)
It is for a legitimate use! I used to buy rubber grease from Halfords years ago for the Morris Minor brakes but they looked blank when I asked yesterday. All they could suggest was CV joint grease.
  • Headlights on during the day 3 Oct 2007 (Forum)
I heard that people who use their lights in the day are 35% less likely to be pulled out on causing them to brake than people who dont. Unless its bright sunshine i always like to put my lights on especially now the days are a bit dull and the light after work is fading.
  • 2004 subaru legacy front discs 21 May 2007 (Forum)
Hi, Some info please. Car needs front discs. Had a look and brake set up looks pretty similar to most modern designs. Question is when I remove the caliper is the disc then free to be removed or is any special tool required.? This will decide whether I do it myself or not.

  • Megane safety recall 15 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Had a recorded delivery letter the other day urgently requesting me to take my 52 reg Megane to a Renault dealer ASAP due to "a possible issue with the brake pedal operation... which may affect your safety". I've had recall notices before but not one sounding quite this dramatic. Anybody got any insider knowledge about it?
  • Halfords part no cross ref. 11 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Is there anyone out there who knows what numbers Halfords use to cross reference there own brands of brake wheel cylinders and timing belts? I have just bought some old stock and can't cross ref. them. I would be very grateful if someone could point me in the right direction. cheers Big Davey.
  • Earthing faults in rear lights 24 Dec 2005 (Forum)
I never cease to be amazed by the number of vehicles that have earthing faults that cause rear lights, brake lights and rear indicators to do weird things. Don't the vehicle owners ever check their rear lights? If the lights don't operate correctly they don't convey the right message, so they can be meaningless to other road users. -- L\'escargot.
  • Handbrakes.. on the wane? 9 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Drive a new Passat or a Renault with an electronic parking brake, realise how good they are and easy to operate then go back to a car fitted with one of them old fangled levers you pull up from the floor. Suddenly you feel like your pulling a lever on a steam train.
  • recall of the volvo 900 series. BEWARE. 9 Sep 2001 (Forum)
i have found that the volvo 900 series has a problem, the throttle can jam, which is quite dangerous. also the brake servo can fail, which is even worse, the problem also effects some of the 700 series, i am not quite sure of the dates, so its best to contact a main dealer.

  • Mazda 3 2015 - Knocking noise coming to stop 23 Feb 2025 (Forum)
My daughter’s Mazda 3 has developed a strange knock once the car has come to a stop with brakes off. The indie can’t find a cause and as it’s intermittent she has been told to wait until it gets worse. Perhaps the Mazda owners have experienced this and can offer a cause please ?
  • Daihastsu Skywing - Range on Battery Only? 13 Jul 2022 (Forum)
I've taken the screeching alternator off and am wondering what sort of daylight range I might expect of a fully charged 45 amp hour battery. In daylight the only electrical load will be the ignition system, brake lights and indicators, but it'll have to be started a couple of times too. Could be good practice for running an electric vehicle.
  • All - How will we be driving in ten years time? 19 Jun 2018 (Forum)
I expect car safety systems will brake for us, sensors will not allow vehicles over the speed limits...which will have many 20mph zones. Diesels and petrol cars will be on he well on way out  in favour of electric cars. MOTs will be a nightmare with all the safety systems being failure risks.

This is the latest version of my experimental device for monitoring acceleration and braking forces. Driver aims for zero force to obtain maximum saving. You can see a video showing how it works in town. Just enter 'Laurence ivan laud'  into the Youtube search bar. I would be very grateful for any comments or observations
