When is a car run in? 22 Aug 2008 (Forum)
From time to time someone writes in to HJ in the paper and says "I've got a Merc 123 which has covered 275,000 miles." And HJ sometimes replies (words to the effect of ) "that's only just run in. There's a bloke in New Milliband, Texas whose Merc 123 has covered 350,000 miles." So when is an ordinary car run in? How can you tell? Does run in mean at the peak of performance for that particular car? -

leave engine running or turn off? 19 Feb 2005 (Forum)
When sitting in a traffic jam, or waiting for someone (or whatever), when should one turn off the engine, and when should one just leave it running? Or, to put it another way - how long does one have to sit before it becomes more sensible to turn off the engine instead of letting it run? -
Peugeot - Expert 2.0 HDI running on fault. 29 Jan 2010 (Forum)
i have a running fault with a Peugeot expert 2.0 hdi. it starts and runs with 298 bar at the fuel rail-not fluctuating when idling. it will sit idling all day but when u switch off it runs on for 5 secs. when you try and drive it just cuts out but will start up and stay idling. i've replaced rail pressure sensor, in tank fuel pump and also fitted a re=con high pressure pump. checked all the wiring. keep getting fault code p1138. after replacing the hp pump it did run ok for about 4 hours. any ideas? -
golf driver runs out of steam 1 Jul 2003 (Forum)
the other funny is that the engine runs better when the ignition is way advenced (ie the haynes says it should be 18 BTDC at 950rpm) but my car runs happiest at about 28 BTDC. I suspect it would run fine beyond this but haven't tried it, I've never heard the engine pink. -

HJ's DT comments on "running in" oil. 23 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Re the correspondant with Skoda (a 1.9 so presumably a TDi) talking about oil usage and HJ's comment about VAG stopping the use of recycled oil for the running in period. I guess VAG dont use "running in" oil in the PD engines because they need a specific oil spec for sake of the health of the unit injector pumps. Is there is any evidence of high oil consumption with PD engines compared to early non PD TDis that may have had a fill of recycled "running in" oil from new?.
