  • What damage is ethanol causing in car engines ? 4 Mar 2024 (Forum)
It’s well known that the addition of ethanol in petrol used in garden machinery engines and classic motorcycles is damaging carburettor s and supply pipes to the extent they need replacing rather than servicing. Blocked jets and pipes that can’t be cleared by conventional means , even ultrasonics as it sets rock hard. Additives prove useless too I’m told .
  • Mazda 6 Skyactiv Petrol 9 Jan 2024 (Forum)
Only question is, how does the drive and performance of a naturally aspirated petrol compare to say s turbo charged petrols, or turbo diesels as they are all I've driven for near on twenty years? Also much to recommend between the 143 and 163 bhp versions? The latter seems hard to come by
  • used cars with light steering 21 Jul 2023 (Forum)
My wife suffers a from weak wrists. We are looking for a sub £4k coupe/convertible/hatchback car. She loves MX-5's but happy with any cute/stylish looking car BUT it must have very light steering. ..and thats the issue. Most of the older cars we have tried have quite heavy steering even if they have so called PAS No idea what people might suggest.. it will be fun !
  • Any - New driver rule 10 May 2023 (Forum)
They were talking about it before the pandemic but this news is from a few weeks ago - https://www.google.com/amp/s/news.sky.com/story/amp/new-drivers-under-25-could-face-young-passenger-ban-under-graduated-driving-licence-scheme-12864069 I just passed in Feb but I'm almost 40 so I don't think this applies to me but just wondering...
  • Mondeo - Worth a look? 23 Feb 2022 (Forum)
Inspired by the Jag S type thread (but down a notch or two) I've just noticed that a well respected local dealer has a 2004 Mondeo Ghia x 2.0 auto (petrol) for sale at £1750. 72k miles. No more info than that at present so can't check MOT history etc.
  • Vauxhall Chevette - Saw A Chevette 20 Feb 2022 (Forum)
Parked up on a drive near my sister in law's place. It was in really good condition "S" reg in an orage colour. This one had a boot. I would have though they would have all rusted to bits by now! I was quite surprised really I had one for a short time when I was 19. It leaked oil, had loads of white gunk under the oil cap and rusted easily.
  • Toyota Yaris Mk 1 - Best cheap small hatchback 25 Oct 2021 (Forum)
Just off to pick up DIL s Yaris auto after an mot and service. Its 22 years old and a Mk 1 built in Japan and it passed ok apart from a replacement wiper blade. These early examples are really amazing and must set the standard for a cheap sub £1000 first car.
  • Which cars have reliable air con systems 6 Aug 2020 (Forum)
Driving round with my windows down because my air con repair will cost twice as much as the car is worth I noticed how many cars are in the same position. The exception is my DIL s Yaris Y reg. But which makes and models have a good track record? As this repair is so expensive and expertise seems so difficult to find as its such a seasonal requirement.
  • n/a - Which pump Love? 27 Dec 2019 (Forum)
Does anyone remember a wonderful tale posted here about an old chap trying to pay for his fuel who was not familiar with how pump numbers worked? This is going back many years - early 2000's probably. The girl behind the counter asked him which pump he had used and he replied 34. I won't spoil the punchline, but it was comedy gold. I'd love to re-read it.
  • Locked keys in car 1 Aug 2019 (Forum)
Just read SLO76's annoying holiday experience of this.   Nearly thirty years ago (when cars were easier to break into) I was undisturbed in broad daylight on holiday in Switzerland as I eventually gained access to our VW GL5 estate with a borrowed screw driver, pliers and wire coat-hanger.
  • BMW 320 I and Suzuki Swift - James May's recommendations 22 Jul 2019 (Forum)
But can you recommend a 3 series diesel going back to pre Dpf days that does not have the dreaded chain problem. Also do the more recent 320 D s have Dpf problems? Would welcome your recommendations.

Hello, Was all set to buy a 1 series BMW convertible ( budget around 6-7k) when s mechanic friend warned me about the timing belt issues with the N47 engine. I have tried unsuccessfully to see if any of the convertibles of this vintage (58-61) do not have the engine with the issue?
  • Vauxhall Corsa - How much is my car worth? 28 Sep 2018 (Forum)
Hi all, planning on selling my car but got no idea what it’s worth. It’s a 2010 Vauxhall Corsa s 1.0 ecotech with 52000 on the clock. Has 12 months not. Unfortunately it’s a cat n (non structural damage) write off. Fully repaired. 1 key and no service history. Works perfectly. How much could I sell this for privately?

  • Accord and Avensis CVT 30 Dec 2017 (Forum)
I like the sound of CVT’s. I’ve heard many hate them but I’d like to try one and Honest John reckons the Multidrive S CVT in the Avensis (2009-2015) is a great one. which Accords had a CVT and was it as good as their other auto boxes?

  • Stansted Airport - Tempted to try meet and greet 28 Apr 2016 (Forum)
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/travel_news/article-3563449/Airport-meet-greet-driver-sacked-ragging-customer-s-car-dropped-holiday.html   I wonder if the insurance company dat could show if the driver (since sacked) was speeding at any time. Surely he could then be prosecuted for driving without due care etc.
  • Audi A1 Sportback - Stop/start 19 Apr 2016 (Forum)
I feel that Stop/start is a safety hazard in my A1 Sportback S-tronic. There can be a significant delay, foot of the brake, nudge accelerator and then wait for the engine to start.  I have tried to get into the habit of turning this feature off when I first get into the car but I would rather not have to.
  • Surprisingly cheap cars to run? 18 Aug 2015 (Forum)
Just wondering, as I wouldn't want to dismiss any cars because I assume they are too expensive to run. E.g. nice BMW's, 4x4's etc. Not sure if this makes sense or is a daft question, but thought i'd ask :p Thanks
